How do I set the correct gap on a modern spark plug?
I'm changing the plugs on my 94 trans am. The correct gap should be .050 the spark plugs the guy at napa sold me are NGK Iridium IX and they are right about .040
I tried using an old spark plug gap setter (round guy with varius 'sizes' that you just press through) and the damn thing broke the electrode.
Should I worry about setting the gap? If so, how do I set it without breaking more 10$ spark plugs?
Are these spark plugs any good? (TR5IX 7397)
Thanks!

you shouldn't gap iridium or platinum plugs. they are pre-gapped. and as you found out it will break the electrode.
only re-gap copper plugs.
that is what i have always been told and never had a problem.

Just be careful when gapping them. Use a plug gapping tool---a few cents or free from Auto Zone. Dont use blades that are used to gap points and rockers. Just as you don't use a torque wrench when installing plugs, you don't use a crow bar when setting the gaps.
