How do you make a bad-*** heads and cam combo for a 383 when you already have a cam??
I know that you need to match your heads to your cam but, what if you already have the cam, and dirent match the heads or springs to the cam? How do you find out what heads, and springs will make the best of the cam already in your car? This is what happend to me. First I was doing a heads and cam stock bottom end LT1 with stock ported heads and a CC306,long story short- I spun a bearing and bought a 383 . I them bought a coustom gind cam and a lot of parts. Anyways this combo proved to suck a **** load. Thats why i need everyones input to tell me what is wrong and what needs to change! I will beging to list every fu#*en thing thats on the motor There is a misfire somewere but i cant find it. At night you can see the plugs on cylinder #1,7,2,8 glowing ?? And there is a weird knock coming form the motor? But its not the rods or bearings, i pulled the oil pan off and looked at everything and it looked fine. Im starting to think that it might be the springs because there not for the FMS custom grind cam. What do you think? The spings pressure rate was set up for the CC306 not the new cam .

Sell the cam, get a nice set of heads ported (Lt1/4 or AFR), flow them, and grind a custom cam to match the heads.

i dont have that kind of time. so how do i find out what heads would be a perfect match for the cam?

if you talk to a knowledgeable head porter by the specs of the cam he should be able to determine the rpm range and what flow at the diff. lifts you need to compliment it. It can be done by the right person though.

While my motor may not be the end all to beat all it makes 414RWHP 412RWTQ and that was with a miss and a bad exhaust leak. I have AFR comp ported 195's and a CC 306. I am sure now that I have the miss and exhaust problem fixed I can get 420+ no problems and thats running a tad rich with the belt on and the motor hot on a stingy dyno, no tricks just HP

I desinged the motor around this cam and it does exactly what I thought it would. Notice I went with smaller heads and lower CR as well (195-vs-210 and 10.7:1CR) I wanted a streetable motor that got good MPG, had a broad flat Tq curve and produced 420RWHP 400 + RWTQ. The motor did all that and more (more tuning for the 420 but 414 first time out I will take it) I get 17 MPG in town no cam surge (Thanks to two great tuners Ion and Jeff) and the thing pulls like a Mack truck. I think the 306 is about the perfect all around cam for the 383, want more HP or TQ I would go solid roller.

it takes less time to get a cam ground than it does to send off your heads to get ported. I ordered a custom grind and had it within a week.
