How does timing affect gas mileage?

How does timing affect gas mileage?

I have heard if you add a few degrees of timing(advance the timing) that your fuel economy will suffer. Is this true... why? I personally dont see how this could be but Id like to hear some opinions.

I know it does a little, but as for why I wouldn't really be a good one to explain that it has to do with...well the timing ...I can't really explain, I kinda understand it but don't really know hwo to explain it.
