Arrow How hard should it be to turn an engine out of the car?

I've got an LT1 that I recently bought and I'm almost ready to install it in a '93 I bought a few weeks ago.
The motor I bought is on a stand and I tried turning the crank with the belt off, but it was a little hard. (well, I only used a ratchet) I know the motor hasn't been run in a couple of years but the previous owner supposedly oiled it and turned it from time to time. What's weird is that it doesn't have an oil filter on it....

Soo... what do you think I should do? Should I put an oil filter and oil and try to turn it again, or should I maybe pull the oil pan to see what's going on? (pulling the pan would be a PITA for me to do right now)

The motor itself looks very good on the outside.. here are some pictures:

Also, there is no evidence of it ever being taken appart.

Let me know what you think. I'm dropping the engine from the 93 next week.

Thanks!

Some oil wouldnt hurt...just after mine was built it only had assembly lube and turned over relatively easily....it wasnt a struggle by no means.

Maybe take the oil pan off a lube everything up a little?

should be fairly easy to turn it over. put a ratchet and breaker bar on one of the balancer bolts and turn it, should go fairly easy
take the spark plugs out for easier time.

i doubt pulling the pan would show much unless there is damage to the pistons or cylinders.

If all the plugs are in, there will be resistance from compression. If all the rockers happen to be backed off, too, it's going to be even harder.

if the spark plugs are out of the motor and it is still difficult to turn it over....you may want to check for a spun bearing or a bent rod......however there should always be some resistance when you try to turn the motor over.

Well, I got some good news. I pulled all plugs today and put 5 quarts of fresh oil in the engine. I also pulled the driver side valve cover to put some oil on that side's rockers. Did about 3-4 360 degree turns, everything is ok.

John,
I took the car out of the garage and in the mean time, the other guy already dropped his engine there... so it can be done.
I guess we'll have to be a bit creative... either borrow another garage with more room or something else. At this point all that has to be done is to get the car up and disconnect a few bolts.
I'll work more on the car today and tomorrow... still have to modify the 94 M6 harness to work with the 700r4's TCC connector and VSS but I'll probably get that done tonight.

Let me know when you have time next week. There will be at least one more guy helping this time.

cool
I will be going out of town on thursday and be gone till next wednesday "on a business trip"
coincidnetilly I will be picking up my Camaro in Oregon at the same time and driving it back
I would be willing to help after that on some weekend day. I will have to see what the wife works b/c of baby duties.
If you could find a way to tow the car we could use my garage for a couple of days, but that's a haul for you and not sure you'd wanna do that
