How many miles is too high for LT1?
#2
depends on how well it was maintained as well as how it was driven. these engines can last a long long time. Check the basic things you would check for when looking over a car. Check to see what parts have been replaced. Specifically the optispark, fuel pump, water pump. these are a few things that if failed could cause a sudden weight loss in the wallet.

my 1994 z28 has 167k miles on the engine only big problem i have is i blew my exhaust manifold gaskets so i just ordered a set of headers.
she leaks a bit of oil but canot complain.
one thing to look at is transmission

Things that I would ask about:
Intake manifold gaksket
Optispark
Waterpump
fuel pump
Those are the most common things that fail, like others have said.
I have 62000 on my LT1 and have replaced my waterpump, fuel pump (under warrenty), and my intake manifold gasket (under warrenty)
Feel behind the engine, where the intake manifold meets the block. If there is oil back there, it most likely has an intake manifold leak.
Drive the car and listen for anything that sounds abnormal. The LT1 is a fairly smooth running engine. It should have a very very mild shake at idle, almost unnoticable.
117k is not a ton of miles for the LT1, but it's still quite a few on any car. If you plan to mod it, it makes less of a difference because you end up changing so many engine parts anyways.

over 200K
I'm currently on 258,000 miles with only the water and fuel pumps in need of replacement - and that was a few miles ago. Treat her like a lady and she will always perform...

I have 106k on my 96 Z, well taken care of, NONE of the seals leak or seep a thing and it burns no oil, with the open air box and a light optioned car I can hang with LS1's I can't win but I can hang with them. Most of them have half the miles I do also.
