Re: How much for 383 upgrade if done right?

Check out RPM one of the sponsors. Very nice guys took about 2 weeks from order to my door and it looks great. Im on a budget and this was my ticket out. I have LE heads and a pacesetters and preety much everything i need and im setting at about $4100. I will R&R it myself. I bought some stuff used but most is new on sale and things.

Good luck.

My shortblock toped the scales 375 in the wooden crate.

Their 383 set up looks good but I would want to upgrade to a forged crank. Can anyone here comment on their reputation? I recall someone a few months back complaining about their services or soemthing.

Re: How much for 383 upgrade if done right?

I would look at eBay for the internals as a kit... Keep an eye out for "Super Engine Builders" who sold me a very nice forged Eagle crank, forged Eagle h-beam connecting rods, and forged JE pistons, balanced with Clevitte 77-H bearings (+cam bearings), and even the SRP L19 rod bolts for $1600 free ship to my door. Make sure that whoever you think of buying from online has a lot of positive feedback and a PayPal money-back gurantee to insure your purchase.

I chose a good shop to do the block work and assembly: $1300, they used some guide plates to do the overbore to make sure that the cylinder walls were perfectly round. They also said that the 2-bolt main was def. good for 1000HP, and my kit is also good for 1000HP with the large L19 rod bolts (a bitch to clearance they said)... I plan to throw on a blower in a year or two.

So, $2,900 for everything quickly turned into OVER $10,000 when I was done, and I did my own work.

Re: How much for 383 upgrade if done right?

Hope you can make it for that-- I never have. You will be lucky to do a full short block, ready for heads, setting on the pan, timing cover on for under $5000.00.This is including R&R and build. Now that's NOT stock pan,oil pump, oil pump drive, timing chain. I don't use stock stuff like that an a stroker or any engine I build unless it was a bone stock rebuild with no go fast parts.
So, $2,900 for everything quickly turned into OVER $10,000 when I was done, and I did my own work.
I probably should have said, should be able to be done without an incredible amount of bad luck, trouble, and non-absolutely necessary additional upgraded parts, for a little under $3000

Re: How much for 383 upgrade if done right?

I got $4K from the machine shop. Crower sportsman rods, Crower forged enduro crank, je pistons, added 4 bolt main caps, align bored, decked, cylinders bored. Cleaned, mag work, rings, bearings, gaskets. Another 1K from summitt, oil pan, timing gear set, flywheel, dampner, more $$$ for waterpump, plugs, hoses, etc. You get the message. Heads were freshened up ($700). Add transmission, new converter, and tires. Hey this is expensive.

Re: How much for 383 upgrade if done right?

Good going ejfagala, this is probably about the best deal out there.
At this website
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/sho...d.php?t=1001531
there is this deal offered by AP Engineering

383 LT1 SHORTBLOCK
$2,300.00
EAGLE ESP CRANKSHAFT
DIAMOND FORGED PISTONS / FLAT TOPS OR DISH
DIAMOND 4130 CHROMEMOLY WRIST PINS
DIAMOND PRO SELECT RINGS
EAGLE H BEAM CONNECTING RODS
MICHIGAN 77 MAIN BEARINGS
CLEVITE CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS
CLEVITE CAM BEARINGS
ARP MAIN STUDS
MACHINE BLOCK
BALANCE AND BLUEPRINT
ASSEMBLED

NO CORE CHARGES

The crankshaft is cast, the seller says in the thread that the pistons are popular with LS1's. Does anyone know anything about Michigan 77 bearings? Is anyone familiar with AP Engr.? Any other expert opinions?

Actually AP Engineering I noticed is a supporting vendor here too, and their shortblock sale is listed here also.

Re: How much for 383 upgrade if done right?

I just want to warn about ebay. Be very wary of an independent selling the items. If they are a business selling on ebay or have an ebay store then I would trust them. I bought a BBK 58 MM throttle body from a member of ebay under the name super97camaro. It was not new. The throttle screw was mangled as the moron must have used a needle nose pliers to adjust it. The screw in the top plate was broke . How do you do that anyhow, if it is new? The gasket was torn from the idiot prying it off. It had deposits on the throttle blades. Instead of using the foam gasket on the tps he used rtv. He denied it was used. I had pics and people around when I opened it. It reaked of gas. I knew before I had seen it ,thru all the wrapping, that I had been had. He said he had to install it to port his intake The gasket would have been what was needed
and then maybe install a few bolts w/o the gasket just to verify, .....anyhow I paid way too much for this part and he wanted to sell me a 383 with lt4 heads which he said flowed well over 300 cfm. I had a hard time believing him with the heads, even lt4 heads, to flow WELL OVER was a little too much for me to believe. I could only imagine what the engine was really like..... Learn from my mistake and just be very cautious when you buy on ebay. I sell on ebay regularly but at least I can describe my stuff honestly. Some guys are just trying to unload their junk and don't care who they rip off in the process. There are still some good people on ebay, but they seem to be few and far in between. Just my .02 on ebay!
