Lightbulb How to prime the oil pump in a LT1 engine

Hello All,
I have a 95 LT1 engine, what is the easiest way to prime the oil pump? I am getting ready to install the engine in my car, and its been in the garage for 5 months... I put fresh oil in it, and turned it over with no obovious problems.

Any help is greatly appricated.

Thanks,
Kevin Hershey

That a good question. A manual that I have said to Soak your lifters and rockers in oil, while the lifters are in the oil, pump them up with a pushrod, install, and fill the pushrods up with oil when you tighten the valvetrain. Then turn engine over with the starter with the coil disconnected. Different then how we used to do it on the older chevys, but it should work.

You should've prelubed the entire engine already as well as filling lifters and lubing rockers. If your question is how do you prime the engine oil prior to starting, when I did mine I turned it over with the starter till I have oil pressure. dissconnect the ign fuse.

Un-hook coil wire turn over till you see pressure.

With the intake off, at the back of the block you can do it with a drill to spin, if you used prelube though or it was assembled within a few days ago I dont see whats wrong with using a starter method and no fire, since it will only turn over probably about 400-500 RPM.

Just done this.

I took the oil pump drive gear apart Picture . This is the black looking piece that fits down in the hole near the rear of the block.

In order to prime the entire block you have to have that plastic piece in the hole or you will only prime one side of the block. Or you can buy a tool that already has this done to it.
There is a pin that holds the gear on the shaft, if you remove the pin than you can get the gear off and than put the plastic piece down in the hole. We used a drill with a sloted screw driver looking thing and used that to turn the pump.

Even after we put the motor in the car we went ahead and turned the motor over and checked to make sure we had oil pressure before the motor was started. (Just pull the ignition fuse)
