I think i found the limit of a stock rotating assm.
I just put my eninge back in the car early this week.. had it idling in the garge today and gave it a quick rev to about 6800-7000rpm, and heard quite the nice snap then the egine just stoped, no rev down, just hit a brick wall, now starter just clicks, and cant even turn it over with a 1/2 ratched and the crank bolt.. think its time for new rotating assembly.

I totaly forgot about the whole no revin with no load on the enige.. I have spun the engine to 7k a few time on the street in a race, but never without aload, i was just so happy to hear it run again i got a heavy foot for about 1 second and in the one second it hit the rev limmiter at 7100!!!

I am a little pissed about the whole thing, but its just a good reason to get better parts.. And thank you very much i know it is stupid to rev that high, but you would be supprised how fast it revs, with no torqueconverter, and no accesorys running on the front of it, plus a nasty little cam and long tubes.. next time i know better, just and expensive leson.

I can't wait to see pics of where all that rotating energy went! It's not going to be pretty. Post pics...

I will take pics.. i am pulling the engine back out on wednesday and tearing it down, which really sucks sense i just put it back together on monday.. grrrrr. I am not sure what to do yet 355 or 383.. high compression or lower compression.. not sure if i want to do it for an all motor set up or a nitrous set up.. If just all motor i will run a cast crank with forged pistons and rods, if its for nitrous i will throw in a forged crank. I am really tight on funds so this might be taking me a while.. second summer in a row without the camaro on teh street.
By the way, could someone elaborate on why it is a bad idea to rev with no load.. i have known it is for a long time, just never knew why.

update... I had a chance to take the valve covers off today and take a peak at what was in there.. or shal i say what was left in there. I open up the pass. side and all was good.. Then i took the driver side off and all i see is shaterd bits and pices of my $125 pushrods and a butt load of valve locks broken.. The number 1 cyliner broke both pushrods, and the number 3 cylinder broke on pushrod.. So at that point i was kinda happy, though ok.. just some valvetrain dammange.. not to bad. Then i took out the spark plugs for the number 1 and 3 cylinder.. #1 was ok.. but the number 3 was obliterated.. Nuthin but a couple little chunks left. I will be taking the engine out within the next couple days.. I will have pics soon and more details about broken stuff.

Sucks to lose an engine, I toasted my 69 Firebird 400 years ago, likewise not exactly doing "smart" things with it. I believe I ended up in oil starvation land (constant high revs), and lost 3 rods, at least one bolt (? it was a small hole, maybe just a rod gouge) I believe shot out of the oil pan emptying it. When it went it was instantaneous, whatever it was, cast iron and aluminum bits under the intake, not pretty.
If nothing else, if you rev the engine with no load on it, your taking it from a few hundred to several thousand RPM in a nearly instant fashion, that is much harder on the whole getup than taching it up under load with even 500 HP, the revs come alot slower. I would about bet if you could use a high framerate time lapse photog setup, the crank rotation would not look the same under load vs no load.
Your revs are coming probably 4-8 times faster than a 500 HP Camaro would do.
