Ya, first number is the section width in millimeters and the second number is the percentage of the first number for the sidewall height of the tire.
You can put 315/35/17 tires on your wheels, but it will bulge out a lot and will feel really loose.
If you want really wide tires, you need to get a wider rim to fit the wider tires on.

if you want it to look like you have wide tires on your car you will need to go with wide rims. the 285s will only be a little wider 10mm actually. my car looks the same. i take my tires off and they are steam rollers. i put them on the car and they dont look that wide at all. only way to make them look wide is to have wide rims. id just get whatever 275 or 285 tires you choose and be done with it. or go buy some wider rims and go that way.
