Idea for using a cat in true dual setup

This all depends on whether a cat flows the same way from each end, or whether they are directional.

What do you guys think of this...

Going out from long tubes using 3" pipe into each end of a 3" or 4" cat converter. Then attach to those same pipes on each end another set of 3" pipes which would then run out the back of the car.

So, effectively, you are using a 3" or 4" cat. converter as the X-pipe, having it mounted perpendicular to the car.

Like so:

front
....
>-<
....
....
....
rear

with that middle - being the cat.

I thought about this as an alternative to using two cats (for emission checks and reduced smog), while also reducing cost (only one cat, less piping, etc.).

Thoughts?? Has it ever been done?

A possiblity would be a y-pipe into the cat then a y-pipe out, but im not sure if that would make the cat to low being that it would have to be below the d/s, but if your making a dual setup w/ an x pipe anyways 2 cats wouldnt be that much more expensive, I got 2 3" hi flows shipped to me for 135... but im not installing them cuz someone told me he can get the car inspected for me for 75 and pass it w/o cats

Catalytic converters are directional. Also, you don't want the pipes running into a 'T' as it'll do the opposite of scavenging

Running two cats is more effecient for both scrubbing the exhaust and effecient exhaust flow. Also keep in mind that if the converters are placed too far from the exhaust ports they may not reach light off temps. The closer the better for emissions.

Thats a pretty good price for two cats, where did you buy them from. I'm thinking of adding two to mine.

I was wondering.. do you think this will pass emission.. True duals with 2 3" cats and a little alcohol in the gas.. I dont have any emission controls left either.
