Pretty much the way it works here[ and everywhere, I assume?] is, you get an estimate at the shop of YOUR CHOICE [ since body shops are state licensed...]
And the estimate will have itemized parts, labor, and paint costs, etc.. then the insurance company HAS to pay that?

I work at a salvage yard selling to body shops. I deal with this everyday. A shop will take your car and run off the insurance estimate. At which point they find something that needs to be replaced that is not on the estimate, they will call the insurance company and add a supplement. If it is a part that needs to be replaced it will not be a problem. Bodyshops always write the estimates high, thats where they make the extra coin. The insurance adjuster is SUSPOSE to write it low to save the insurance company money. Dont worry, if you picked a GOOD bodyshop, you will not have any problems. You simply pick one you trust, and drop it off. They will take care of the parts, the supplements and all that crap. All you need to do is pick it up. No offense, but at work we have a name for people like you who get too involved in the estimate process. We call you test pilots. Because you have to be friggin stupid to be a test pilot and most of the people who dont get the way it works with bodyshops and get in the middle are friggen stupid too. Not to say you fit this catagory, but you should really just leave it to the shop. That is what they get paid for.

k.. once again this is not going thru a shop... they are just going to write me a check ... the damage is hardly noticaple unless your looking right at it... 95% of it is hidden... so i'd rather spend the money under my hood.... so im trying to make sure i get all the money i deserve just because a shop is not doing it for me

well, despite what dreamer says above, I would tend to disagree...if you don't get involved with the process you are asking to get bent over with no lube. IMO you need to make damn sure that the insurance company will accept a suppliment to the claim. In my case, the insurance company wrote me a check, the body shop fixed the problem and submitted a suppliment to the insurance company. Make sure your insurance company will work with the body shop, and make sure the body shop will do this as well.
Remember in the end, the law is on your side. If the insurance company decides they don't want to pay the claim, even after you submit a valid appraisal, you do have the option of suing them for the money. Sometimes if the insurance company is a bad one, you may have to do that.

Just remember if you take the money and do not fix the car the monies paid will be deducted from the vehicles worth!!!!!
So if the vehicle in question is worth 7,000 and they pay you 2,500 you keep the money, don't fix the car, your car will now be worth 4,500!!!Just understand this IS what will happen!
