Question Installing a cc503 without a tune.

How would that go? I am finally taking my camaro to a mechanic shop to have the engines swapped from a hydro locked lt1 to a recently rebuilt lt1.

But i am also putting in a cc503 cam with gmpp 1.6rr and beehive springs.

I just don't have enough money right now to get the headers and the tune for it. As i am also getting married this month.

how would the car act? Will it at least turn on and move?

I just want it to start and ill be getting the headers and tune asap. I wont be driving it till I do. I have another daily driver for that.

Thanks,
-Ben

Good question because im also doing a 503 swap, but i've just decided that to get the most from the motor.. in terms of performance and drivability that i need to get a tune. Im guessing that there is only so much variance the stock program can deal with before you need to tune for your mods..

I'll be watching this thread myself..

I've heard that it is possible but it will most likely run like complete crap. I didn't run mine without the tune so I can't really say how bad it will or will not run. I do know that on the stock tune you'll more than likely have lots of power loss, crappy mpg's and possibly a good deal of cam surge with that A4 if you don't have a converter and the lock-up raised. If funds are tight I guess I'd give it a shot but I wouldn't daily drive it or anything without a tune. Just my .02 Goodluck!

There is no local dyno shops to get a tune from down here. Do you all think a mail order tune will do?

The reason why i am holding off on the tune is the headers. I don't want to order a tune then have to pay extra when i get the headers in.

And I do want to start up the car as soon as the motor is in to see if everything is alright.

Register your wedding at Summit or Auto Zone. It's either going to be a tune or flat ware. JMHO

I'm on a mail order tune myself from PCMFORLESS. The load yourself tunes are only $75 if you have your own cable. You also get unlimited free retunes for the first 6 months for the same setup(i.e. not adding or changing heads or cam) I'm pretty sure the addition of headers would be ok but I would ask to be safe. My initial tune was pretty close but slightly on the lean side on the dyno. I sent my dyno sheet in and Bryan added some fuel and now it basically dead on for A/F. Not too bad for a mail order tune. I'm sure I could see some gains from a full dyno tune but with something like a cam only CC503 that has been done a million times, mail order is the way to go.

If you try to break in a new engine with a tune that is not even somewhat close, you could run the risk of washing down your cylinder walls with excess fuel and really messing up your new engine. Are you prepared to take that chance?
