For anyone that's done a intake gasket fix for an oil leak, how long did it take you? I had mine done under warranty back in 99, but it's time to do it again.

I was doing other things when mine was off, but I would say for a first-timer, taking your time, you should at least allow for half a day.

I've had the intake off in ~ 45 minutes - scraping heads/intake clean from gasket/RTV will take around 20 minutes - reinstalling intake takes around an hour. I've done this more times than I can count, so it will probably take you a little longer if it is your first time - I'd allow 4-5 hours.

I used some Permatex Ultra Copper for the end rails and Felpro gaskets. No leaks, so far. (1k miles or more since I did it)

First time it might take you a while just because you may not be familiar with tricks/shortcuts etc. Make sure you have all the tools (fuel disconnect tool, rtv, razors etc) and it should take you about half a day or maybe a little longer as shoebox said...

Thanks Rob. I was thinking the Ultra Copper would be the best bet. Any chance you have the part # for the Felpros?

I read on Projecttransam, that Kerry said he used a Dremal with the wire wheel to help get the old gasket off. What do you guys think?

I got the manifold set that had a few other gaskets in it MS95580. ~$17.00

I don't recall the old gasket residue being much of a problem. Plug all intake holes and cover the lifter valley when you start cleaning.

I used Ultra Copper RTV. I had to fix my leak 3 times in a matter of 2 weeks since I never let it sit long enough. I had mine off the last time 22 min.

A word to the wise..let the intake sit for atleast 24hrs, belive me itll be worth the wait.

When I did my intake gasket it took me 2 months! BUT, when I had the intake off I saw those heads just sitting there all alone and knew I had to port and polish them and get the valves done! Which led to a new cam which led to a reprogamed PCM!!! Two months of waiting for parts and just plain tinkering around!!!
Anyhow, the gasket isn't that big of a deal...just have patience!

OK guy thanks. One last question. Do you tighten it down then let it sit, or let it sit then tighten it down?

Tighten down then let it sit. There might be a pattern to torqing down the intake. I forgot but will no when I stick my nose back into the manual... Maybe someone can confirm or deny my allogations....

Work from the inside out rotating sides...ie do the middle two on the left, then the middle two on the right, then two more on the left, then the other two across from them on the right etc.
