Just bought 96' Z28

Wednesday I bought a 96 z(LT1) from a girl. It had been sitting for 2 years unused. 171k mile. Little rough body, interior good. Engine feels strong, no knocks or odd sounds of any kind. Myself and brother in law feel it has a mis in it at lower RPM. Get on it and dont seem to notice it. It is in for oil change right now, put some gas treatment in it yesterday with full tank of gas. Called my mechanic about a tune-up, um $804 total with labor???? Said it is because of the distributor labor. $445 in parts + labor. How hard is it to change spark plugs and wires yourself without having full access to mechanic shop? Any recommendations on wires and spark plugs, not looking for top of the line best on the market. Budget reasons. Something that is good and reliable.
Thanks for any help yall may provide.
(it is an automatic)

Re: Just bought 96' Z28

I managed to change out my wires and checked my plugs in the garage, just jack it up or run up on ramps so you can have access from bottom too. Driver side is simple, passenger side gets to be a pain until you get the hang of positioning your arm and hand in odd positions to grasp the wires and change the plugs. I use to run MSD 8.5mm wires but for budget reasons as well I had to go to a less pricey kit. I now have omni spark wires on, no complaints with them yet.

When I was quoted a price for a tune up I was given just over $650 or so as an estimate. So I just did wires and checked my plugs which were good. No opti work yet, but I think I'll be doing that myself as well to save the labor cost.

Stick with stock size wires. It'll be lots easier.

Re: Just bought 96' Z28

Had inspection done on car yesterday. Pulled and gutted clogged up cat today. Will be getting car registered on Monday. Put some Sea foam in it Last Friday and filled it up(was already half tank) only down to half a tank today. Trying to run through the old gas in it. Then a fresh tank with another can of Sea foam for couple more tanks. So far she is running pretty well. Looks to have a transmission leak around the pan, will address that next week. Slowly getting the mechanicals all up to good condition. Looking at getting a good used rear end with some 3.73 or 4.11s already in it. Then some shorty headers, not enough clearence for LTs.
