Just changed Evap canister...Still have gas smell!!!

Just changed Evap canister...Still have gas smell!!!

Does anyone know what else it could be? I know that theres some kind of check valve that sometimes gets stuck, just dont know where it is. The gas smell is coming out right by the drivers rear wheel. if i have the window up then i cant really smell it but if im driving and my window is even slightly down then i can smell it. Any ideas?? pics and details would be great.

There is a plastic check valve mounted on the LH rear brake hose bracket. Perhaps it is malfunctioning or you have a hose that is split. You should also check to see that the EVAP system is working properly.

Is the pump going bad, causing excessive heat, and excessive vapor to vent from the tank? The canister can only handle a limited amount.

Did you check the hoses at the tank connection? They rot pretty bad?

Did you check the line from the canister to the purge solenoid for carbon plugging?

Did you confirm the purge solenoid is operating?

Did you look for vacuum leaks in the entire length of the hose, from canister to solenoid, and from solenoid to the throttle body?

You may be a little confused.

The canister purge solenoid allows engine vacuum to be applied to the line that goes from the from the engine to the canister in the rear. It only does this when the pcm commands the solenoid to be on. This is what sucks the vapors from the canister into the engine to be burned.

One more thing:
Remove the intake elbow, and open the Throttle Body blades.
Now, can you smell gas inside? I mean, a really nasty gas odour?

You might wanna check the hoses that come from the valve that is between the gas tank and the evap canister. I think it is called a evap purge valve. Check the lines on the evap purge valve. I found one of the hoses that comes from the top of the evap purge valve to be rotted out and was leaking fumes. I changed that line and never had the gas fume smell again. Hopefully that fixes your problem. I know someone here will have a pic or tell you more about the evap purge valve. But it is easy to find and you will know what I mean when you see it about the hose that comes from the top of the valve. Good luck and if you have anymore questions feel free to e-mail me.

Do what white 95 Z said, check those lines up by the fuel tank. My car had the same problem yours did a few years ago and the dealership said some vent hose came loose. They tightend it back up and no more smell!

How hard was it to replace the EVAP Canister? And do you have any part numbers for anything? I still have a code saying something wrong with my EVAP canister, I would like to replace it.

it was easy to do. the canister is behind the drivers rear wheel( i recommend taking it off), behind a plastic shield that is held on by 1 plastic pop in screw and 1 regular screw.

The part number is from NAPA and is CRB 2-20104

I couldnt look up anything on NAPA's website concerning that part #... :\

EDIT: I found a gm p/n though, 17113065. Just need to verify with you guys if this is correct, and if the $33 price tag is reasonable. Thanks!

Just because you have a code, does not mean you need to replace the canister. There are other components in the EVAP system. It is more likely one of them or a hose problem. Do some diagnosis, don't just throw parts at it.
