knock problem
i got a 93. i ran it on datamaster and when the car was off it read 58000 knocks. i dont understnad how but it did. Then with the car on it would flucuate around that area. It is retarding my timing -8 degrees at about 2500. Its a new knock snesors and i just re ran the wires becuase they got melted on the header. Could i have shorted out my computer by them melting. Help me! thanks.

Re: knock problem
The "knock count" field is a cumulative register. It just keeps increasing the number when potential knock situations are encountered, and when it reaches the maximum value, i resets to "0" and starts over again. Its normal to see a value in the knock count field when the engine isn't running. You also can not directly correlate knock count to knock retard. You can get knock retard without the knock count increasing, and you can see the knock count increasing, but no knock retard.
Just focus on the knock retard value. If there was a wiring or knock sensor problem, the ECM would be showing DTC 43. If you don't have that code, the knock retard is a response to a signal from the sensor. Have you tried using higher octane fuel to see if it reduces the retard? Do you have any modifications that could be causing excessive mechanical noise, like roller rockers? It it possible you have a loose motor mount and the rattle is setting off the knock sensor? Any high voltage wires running too close to the knock sensor harness wire? All of these things can cause knock retard.

Re: knock problem
i had a 43 code and changed the knock sensor. I am now running 93 octane sinse about 2 weeks ago. i have roller rockers but because its 93 i can not put on the lt4 kncok module. Someone told me to put resistors but then if it does have a bad knock it could damage my engine. I was going to look for scamatics for the computer and look for the wires to make sure i didnt fry the PCM. Thanks for your help
