knocking, pinging, whatever you want to call it, i've got it
so, i've noticed that if i'm cruising along at say 60mph, and i step on the gas to accelerate to 70mph just hard enough to accelerate, but not enough to make the car downshift (a4), my car seems to knock for a second or two as soon as i move the pedal. it also happens at other speeds. it is hard for me to tell if it does it under say wot, just because of all the noise. i ran a can of b&g 44k ,i beleive is what it's called, a while back, but it didn't seem to do much. the knocking isn't continual, but it is pretty consistent. yes, i ran a search before, but there were about 4 million threads. i realize this is a pretty general question, but are there any 'self tests' i can do to maybe help narrow the problem before taking it somewhere (as i'm a poor college student and i would like to do as much work myself as possible). i'm currently running normal unleaded, but i'm going to put something better in there to see if that helps. could this be an egr problem? i haven't had any check engine lights. the car is a 97 with just under 80k miles. most of the miles have been highway, car has never been to the track, car is stock, and not driven extremely hard on the street. also, tonight, i was playing with the car trying to see under what conditions it would knock, and i put the pedal all the way down to the floor, and i barely even scratched the tires. i have 2.73's with the a4, and i know that's not a good combination, but it should still spin the tires. any info would be great.
thanks in advance

it hasn't always done that though, even with normal unleaded

It is recomended that you run premium in a stock car, these cars have high compression and a very aggressive timing curve stock so you prolly will see knock retard if you run anything less than premium, although in my case i allways see it
