KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
Looking at the KOOKS headers for my 97 T/A but I read in one thread that there might be problems with a 383 and Canton pan as far as changing oil filter. Someone mentioned you need a remote filter with this.
Anyone running this set up that can confirm one way or another?

Re: KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
i had trouble accessing my oil filter w/ LT's. i just use the K&N oil filter with the 1" nut on the bottom of it. that way i just use a wratchet with an extension on it to loosen it and tighten it. is this what you were talking about?
or are you not able to actually even get a filter into the area between the headers and pan?

Re: KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
I am not real sure what the problem was but someone had mentioned that they had to use a filter relocation kit with their KOOKS and Canton 383 pan.
Hopefully someone running this set up can verify what the actual problem is or if there even is a problem.
If it just needs the filter with a nut, I am all over the KOOKS. If it required the filter relocated to the fneder well, I would have to opt for some Hookers.

Re: KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
I have Kooks on my 1997 with stock oil pan. The K&N filter was too tall (4 3/4") to fit with the Kooks, so I'm using a Fram XG30 which is 4" tall.

Re: KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
I don't have the Canton pan, but perhaps it will help if I describe the interference with the oil filter and the Kook's headers.
The header primaries are routed just enough inboard and up that a standard-length filter is difficult to remove easily. The primaries aren't anywhere close to the pan, but the filter won't come all the way down after you unscrew it. It kind of lands on one of the primaries. You have to angle it out over the primaries to remove it from the side. You can imagine this makes quite a mess when your filter is full of oil when removing it. I was able to remove a regular Purolator filter, but it took a while to get the angle just right and it was a royal pain. I've switched to AC Delco filters and they are shorter than the Purolator. The Delco filter goes in and comes out easily with no mess. I can't think how a Canton pan would change where the interference is on this.
BTW, Kook's headers are awesome. Just use some Fel-pro gaskets. The supplied paper gaskets might leak a little.

Re: KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
thanbks for the replies. I am still wanting to hear from someone with this SAME set up that can confirm any problems or lack of problems. Anyone???
it'll be a 383 with my LE2 heads and cam. Same parts I sell for $1650 plus shipping.
Car will be FULL weight with T tops, elec seats, windows, locks, 12 disc CD changer, A/C, etc and probably be about 3700 lbs with driver. Should still run 11.50's at 118 MPH with a 3.42 gear and 4L60 with streetable converter.
I could always rip out the A/C and other extras and drop 500 lbs, install 4.11 gears and a 3 speed auto with 4000 stall but that is not what I am after.
It would be nice to pick up the extra 8-9 tenths from these mods but I am building something I can drive 3-4 hrs in on the highway in 100 degree weather with the A/C on while listening to CD's on the way to any track and still run some high 11's when I get to the track.

Re: KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
Hey Lloyd, Robert here that you redid the heads and LT4 intake I got from Denny. I should be getting a set of Kooks stepped 1 3/4 to 1 7/8" here shortly, they said they were being made last week, but if you need any pics of them once I get them installed let me know, I've got a lift so underside pics is not a problem if you don't find the answers for them fitting with that pan. These are going on with the stock pan, but would be happy to take any measurements / pics you need.

Re: KOOKS headers, 383 and Canton pan?????
I appreciate the offer. i am not sure what all the 383 Canton pan changes but I just remember reading that once.
Hell, I think I'll just order them and wing it. I am sure it can't be that bad or they would obviously change the design. KOOKs is a great company and if they say they will work, I'll get em.
