lifter or injector tick?

i just got my lt1 back in the car. cc503 and 1.6 roller tips. well....one of the reasons i tore into it was bc it was ticking, but it had full roller rockers before and a bigger cam. first start up u could hear no tick, but it was open header. i got my duals on now and its ticking, not as loud as it was.

my question is, can i feel like the top of the valve covers and if i feel a tap on it will that mean that a rocker arms too loose? they r all set at 1/2 turn past 0. my buddy says im paranoid and hydraulic motors sound like that and i need to deal with it. i can deal with the noise i just wanna make sure its ok. i do have aluminum valve covers, will that make the sound louder? also how would i know which side i could pinpoint or if it would be injectors making the noise?

thanks

as for noise, my exhaust is not loud, its not quiet.....so like in the middle. theres no interior drone. u can hear the tick at idle and then it speeds up BUT at about 2k or so it kinda disappears, it doesnt ever really get louder, it just gets faster. does that make sense?

Re: lifter or injector tick?

You won't feel it on the valve cover. Try using a long screwdriver or socket extension as a listening rod. Put it on the valve covers at different points and the other end right to your ear (careful of moving parts!) It really does help isolate the noise. If they're really loose you would probably hear more of a clacking sound than ticking.

Or hold the body of the injector. They should pulse evenly I would think you would feel the bas injector if that was the cause of the problem

Re: lifter or injector tick?

ok i will do that for sure tomorrow. just to clarify it most definitly is a tick. not a knock or clank almost like clicking a pen really fast.

thois makes me wish i had a buddy with a bad lifter so i could know what it sounded like and not be paranoid

With the technology available nowadays it should be relatively easy to post up a video of the noise. That will help us tremendously in diagnosing your condition.

Re: lifter or injector tick?

You can also simply unplug the injectors one at a time to see if the noise goes away or changes. No change means it's not the injectors....
