losing/burning coolant...

this actually isnt in my lt1 but i figured i could find some help here anyway. ive had the vehicle (ford ranger, 94 model) since last december and after i got it i started smelling something like burnt oil once i drove it for a while. the smell doesnt come through the vents or anything, you have to walk in front of it to smell it. but anyway, ive been checking the coolant and its dropped pretty low... yesterday i added over 1/2 gallon. it doesnt leak when it hasnt been driven, therefore making me think that its burning it. if its burning, what could possibly happen and what do i need to do about it? im not real worried since ive been smelling that bad odor for months on end now. thanks for any help
