loss of power at high rpms
im a noobie... i have a little bit of a clue about cars but i need an opinion to work off of.... when im driving at a high rpm my car will back fire and lose power for about 2 seconds..... i know she needs a tune up but i dont think that is that issue she runs strong and i sometimes get a very strong fuel smell when im done driving her.... but she is rode hard.... and high miles..... is it possible that the exhaust leak i have has something to do with it? or could it be that i needed to replace my valve gaskets which i did today...... if you could help me any it would be nice....

Re: loss of power at high rpms
Provide basic info about your car - year, model, engine, trans and any major mods.
Follow-up to the request for basic info - what modifications to the engine, how many miles on the car? Has the car run normally? When were the plugs, wires and the distributor changed? Have the injectors ever been cleaned or replaced? Did you change anything just before you noticed the problem?
Have you scanned it for codes? Have you checked the fuel pressure?
An exhaust leak before the O2 sensors can screw up the O2 sensor readings, and cause the engine to run rich.
What are "valve gaskets"?

Re: loss of power at high rpms
valve covers dont have anything to do with a loss of power. get it scanned so you know if its throwing any codes that need to be adressed. fix your exhaust leaks and give it a tune up. see if that helps.

I think Injuneer was looking for a little more. If you want help you're going to have provide more info.
From the sound of it you just need to find a trustworthy mechanic and pay him to find the problem and fix it. Most people who come on here wanting to fix their car are in over there heads and have neither the time, understanding, nor the tools to diagnose and properly repair their vehicle.

Re: loss of power at high rpms
I would have the alternator and battery checked. Thats free at most auto parts stores and they might have a code reading to see if you have any issues. I would then replace the fuel filter and air filter if its been a long time since the last one. You checked the fuel pressure. What did it read and was this while driving?

Re: loss of power at high rpms
If you know things need to be done. Do them. Exhaust leaks etc.....
A tune up consists of the following:
air filter,
plugs,
wires, (if old or age unknown) alternator side is PITA
Cap and rotor
O2s,
coil,
pcv,
fuel filter (which is where I think your problem is)
After all that, report back
