Loud Thumping Noise...

Seems ever since it got warmer now, when im at WOT and it shifts to 2nd I get this loud bang coming from right under the shifter. Sounds like the car is gonna fly off the road, I was thinking its just backfiring and the car is running too rich. Could the transmission be going out or is there something else I didn't think of? Its an A4, only mod is cutout. Specs in sig.

I don't exactly know what to look for either, however my car made the same noises and it was the tranny mount. It is only like 30 bucks and pretty easy to install...took the shop like 20 mins. and I watched and I could of done the same.

If your trans seems like its gonna jump through the center console whenever you jump at near WOT, you need to replace your trans mounts.

I'd advise going with polyurethane *sp* mounts...they LAST!

well actually theres only one mount, and it sits right btw the crossmember and the tranny. if its broke chances are youll see it split right in the middle like its been chopped in half with a hack saw. ive gone thru a coulpe of em, but try to be easy on it if you have to still drive the car while its broken. if you do alot of "hot-doggin" on a broken mount then you can damage the front u-joint (you can tell when you start to hear a rattling like noise when you accel from a stop) you prolly aint got that far yet tho. it costs about $20-30 (the polyurethane one) and is pretty easy to swap in/out. do a search to get instructions others prolly can tell you how better than me. yup, it was the transmission mount. I took it off and the rubber was completely disconnected from the metal framing. It looks like its been shot for awhile, just started making the noise a few days ago though. Something must of just finally gave. Had no problem taking the old one off or putting the new one on. Thanks for the heads up guys.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Re: Loud Thumping Noise...

just blew another one, is this normal to be blowing them so fast? Could something else be causing it? Engine mounts, u-joints?

Re: Loud Thumping Noise...

check your motor mounts.

although i went through about 7 mounts in six months before i finally gave into the poly mount. my motor mounts were fine. the tranny mounts just kept blowin. the poly mounts vibrate a little but then get better with a few hundred miles. not nearly as bad as i suspected. get the poly and youll be fine

*edit* holy **** man. i just saw this thread is a year and i half old. if a rubber mount lasted that long then i say you did pretty good.

Ya i would say you got some good use out of that one. Just pick up another and throw her in. Or get the poly and never have to worry about it. Just live with alittle vibration.

Re: Loud Thumping Noise...

lt1 are notorios for doing that and i just saw that the original post was from 03, so if you didn't get a poly mount to begin with then yes thay can go even faster than that. To my surprise, i was able to pick up a Energy Suspension mount from Auto Zone for like 20 or 30 bucks.
