Ls or lt?

Which one and why? I am not sure if I want to continue my LT or start planning for an LS. Wanting to get some opinions. Thanks, Edward.

LS lighter engine, already comes with more power, mod for mod it will most likely be faster, and the aftermarket world is much bigger.

Re: Ls or lt?

LS if you have the money. LT only if those are the only 2 choices and you don't have a lot of money. LT would be my LAST choice to mod among all the other choices.

2 consistant problems with the LT. Steam pockets in the water jackets and the dreaded "optical distributor". Not saying everyone has those issues. I never did, but the design lends itself to issues with both of those.

There is a reason GM banked on the 3rd and 4th gen SB's. I like DIS but I disagree with using plug wires. Would be much better if it were coil-on-plug.

Here is some information on all the 3rd and 4th gens available.

Just my $.02 probably not worth that if you tried to cash it in though.

Agree with these guys; if you can afford an LS build, there's no reason not to do it.

Re: Ls or lt?

I have an LT1, these are the cars for guys like me who want a lot of performance for not a lot of money. LS1 cars are going to cost you a little more, but they are probably worth it. The LT1 uses a cast iron block, where the the LS1 is all aluminum, saving weight. The LT1 has an opti-spark which is a bad design, being right under the water pump. The LS1 uses coil packs to each spark plug which is a far superior design. After doing extensive research, there are very few companies that actually support the LT1. But the LS1 you can get parts for anywhere, they are very run of the mill these days. Everyone carries parts for them in stock. If I had a choice and unlimited budget i'd be all over an LS1.

Go with a lt1, a lot of guys already mod ls1s. I am the type that likes to build a motor most say is inferior, and smoke the superior motor. I get a lot of people asking if my car is a ls1, when I say no they are shocked because its fast and sounds great; like the ls1 is the only motor that could sound like that. You could swap to a ls1 pcm and drop the opti.

That's absurd, tons of people mod both.

People who are shocked that you can build a fast LT1 are just idiots. Impressing people like that shouldn't be high on anyone's priority list.

Most people who have spent time around both think LT1s sound better anyway.

Without a doubt. My wife has a ZO6 and it sounds like crap next to my Trans Am. The Borla stinger she has doesn't help either.....chuckle

Re: Ls or lt?

I agree, my LT1 is scary fast. I used to have a 2004 goat with the LS1. It was a fast car too, but I think pound for pound the modded LT1 is every bit as fast as the stock
LS1 car. The only mods I have are long tubes, a cam and pcm tune. I love the way my LT1 sounds too, even if it does have quiet flowmasters on it at the moment, which is the way I got it. On downshifts with my M6 car, the engine actually slows you down. On my GTO, the engine didn't feel like it would slow you down if you downshifted. Maybe it's something to do with the compression ratio? LT1 is a great performer in my book.

That is true people do mod both, but around my neighborhood I see a lot of modded ls1s and very few moded lt1s. Guys around here try to make their lt1 cars look like ls1 cars; mostly changing the front end and rear tail lights. But I think you guys are right the LT1 is the better sounding; my hotcam LT1 sounds a lot better than my buddies ms3 ls1. I still say stick with the lt1; but a lsx 454 would be nice.
