Yeah, but i am looking at a 96-97 ss ... They are rated at 305-315 flywheel horsepower.. so that would be more like 280 hp at the wheels right? You have a 95 the flywheel horsepower on those were like 275..

My 95 LT1 dynoed 292 rwhp and 330 rwtq, with just hooker shorty headers and through a cat and full bolt ons. I could have easily gotten up to 305 rwhp or so w/ a set of long tubes like I have now. Even with that 292 rwhp I could beat stock LS1s. The thing is, you can get 290-300 rwhp out of an LT1 for less money than you can get a used LS1 for (usually). Plus, I like the look of the LT1 trans ams better than the look of any other F body. Now don't get my wrong I would rather have an LS1, but I'm happy w/ my cammed LT1. And LT1s are great for supercharging!!

thats the whole thing..we may start out 50RWHP behind, but we also start out $4000 or more ahead in money. For $4000 I can make my LT1 run 11's

Thanks man I plan to keep on gettin' her quicker the right way..

In response to Eddie.. There were two heads/cam LS1's at the track last night that are only hitting about 2 more MPH than I am at the track, and couldn't keep up with me as far as ET goes. If I throw on a set of heads, who's going to be outrunning who here.

With all that said and done, it's the efficiency and practice and comfort level you get with your car in my opinion. I'm hitting 12.4's with maybe 320-325 rwhp... show me how many LS1's are doing that. LT1's from what I can see will out ET an LS1 at the track with much less HP than said LS1. Don't believe me? Look around your local track and disprove me.

Now if you're worried about pulling people in 3rd gear on the street, you're on your own, I don't street race, and when I do it's light to light, and I'll eat up most LS1's you run into on the street that will come my way in an 1/8 mile race.

To be completely honest it comes down to personal opinion on the style. I personally like the 96-97 Style SS WAY more than the looks of ANY LS1. I HATE the 93-96 interior, so a 97 SS would be awesome.

Power wise, LS1's will take a cam and N2O and run like a raped ape. LT1's can be quick as well, you just have to mod wisely.

Lots of people sink lots of money into parts for little gain. Save your money and go for a big gun, no matter which engine you get. Go straight for internals or power adders. Then when you add bolt-ons like exhaust and TB's later you WILL notice a gain.

If you don't care about the F-Body style, then why get one at all? If you're concerned with HP/performance alone, then you can buy anything and build it out, including Stangs.

The F-Body is a "style" statement. It looks fast and it compares with newer styles and in my opinion its uniqueness stomps some of the newer so-called muscle machines.

Between the 97 and newer style, I much prefer the 97, especially the SS (which by the way) I purchased new in April 97.

I believe that GM should have stayed with the 97 style and just planted it with the LS1, but they didn't. And frankly, I wouldn't have bought my 97SS if it had come with the Chrysler head lights and fatter hood.

And this "out-of-the-box" comparison is, in my opinion, inane. Anyone who is impresssed with "out-of-the-box" specs is on the wrong site.JM.02

They only changed the front end to fit the LS1 under the hood.

I wanted to convert my 98 Z28 to the front-end of 97 SS but I heard it fits like crap and you have to use a crappy air intake because the LS1 lids won't fit under an LT1 SS hood.

ya know , i was looking at a 98 SS before I got my 97 , it had 26k miles on it and was immaculate . They would take 15500 for it which I thought was a great deal . Plus it was that red , man it was gorgeous. I couldnt qualify for financing tho and Im kinda glad I didnt (i'm 21 and have just about no credit whatsoever) . 2 weeks later Im getting breakfast and I see a stack of autotraders . Im like what the hell , its a buck ,Ill take a look. I see "1997 z28 LT4 heads & hc lowered.... $6500" The car came with everything in my sig installed !!! Talked him down to $5000 because of an exhaust leak and whining rearend. Me and a friend rebuilt the rearend (was a chipped pinion bearing) , and the exhaust leak turned out to be 2 broken off header bolts (ok I found why its so cheap) 900 bucks to drill and repair both heads and reassemble my exhaust + installed my plugs ,wires , new belt , fixed my leaking valve covers , etc little PITA things . SO now I have $6000 bucks total in my car and I dont regret it a bit !!!

You are probably right about that. They sure didn't plan on building a whole new platform for the LS1, so all they needed to do was change the front end to accommodate engine.

That's probably one reason the Camaro went bye bye for awhile (because they didn't have a replacement along with the newer engine). So now we have the F-Body with the Lt1s and the Numerous F/Body-by-chryslers with the Ls1s, and no more Camaros.

Kinda like the "new" retro T-Bird. How did this get past the queer guys for straight guys? The design sucks and, in my opinion, is not "retro" but more like "sucko".

For the record (and I want to be very clear on this point) I believe that the 97SS is one of the best looking vehicles ever produced. AND...if you want to really have something to have fun with you can mod the hell out of the "lowly" Lt1 to spank every other vehilcal on the road including the $$$$$ Euros.

depends which transmission you prefer really...but the 96 auto sounds like a better deal w/o knowing the details...15k is low milage but 57k also isnt bad for the year...at this time of year you should be able to talk the price on the 97 down a little

man...i paid too much for my car although i knew it at the time i didnt care that i paid a little more than i may have been able to get it for
