Its simple to pull it out the top. Best way is to buy a happy hooker from tpis as stated before, it bolts to the intake mainfold where the fuel rail bolts down and has a hook on it to pull the engine with. Undo the wiring harness. drop the trans, take out the radiator, i dont have ac so im not sure if you would have to pull the condesor or whatever its called. Take off the accesory's and braket, and water pump. i can get mine out in about an hour and a half to two hours.

So the happy hooker actually bolts to the manifold? I figured you would have to take the manifold off first, then it would bolt on.

yep.. take fuel rail off and bolt the happy hooker on.

While were on the subject I pulled my last lT1 out with the tranny, But that that was on a wrecked car after I sawed off the front. Can you pull just the motor out the top without removing the tranny (M6)?
