Re: LT1 Airgap Intake Manifold

That is outstanding looking work. If you can get substantiated proven gains and/or improvements, you're going to have people chomping at the bit, including me.

Re: LT1 Airgap Intake Manifold

Here's a couple of questions for ya.

What are you doing about a provision for the PCV now??

Is this going to be compatible with AIR/EGR connections on the backs of the LT1 manifolds or will they HAVE to be blocked off?

Wow - Just when you think nothing unique can be done to these motors anymore...

That looks amazing. Please keep us posted on any perf gains you may see. I would definitely try to find some "beta" testers if I were you and see for sure what it's doing for your times/HP.

Nice jorb.

I cut out ALL passages, except the runners themselves of course. For pcv just run it old school, with the pcv valve in the valvecover, getting it's vacuum from the intake plenum. I am not running a pcv valve, but using the stock air pump as an evac system.

If you look at the pic showing the back of the intake, all that has been cut off. I am not concerned with emission compatibality, this is a "lets see if the stock intake can work better" project. There is no way to open it up like this and keep the emissions provisions functional.

yeah, I definitaly thought about it, getting it ported the way I wanted was a pain, and took up about 1/2 the time. I didn't intend to spend this much time on it, but once into it, I couldn't stop! Cutting the lid off would of helped with the internal porting, and a larger plenum would be nice, but I want to see how much the stock piece can be improved.

yes, and no. The underside of the plenum is stock, I didn't remove any of that. Where I added the diamond plate, that seals off the lifter valley.

it gets hot like any other aluminum intake, but it cools down faster than the stock piece. There is 6 lbs less mass too so once you start driving again the cooler incoming air has less work to do to cool it down. I have not run nitrous thru it yet for a full run, and thats where I am hoping its biggest gains will be realized. I run a wet system, so the -120 degree F mist in the plenum and runners should cool the air temps down sooner during the run.

Re: LT1 Airgap Intake Manifold

Nytrus1, thanks for the answer. When you say run it old school style, I'm assuming you mean that you'd run the PCV from the valve cover to a vacuum port on the manifold, correct?? In which case, wouldn't you want to put a new port in the manifold (on the driver side near the tube that comes out of the valve cover that goes to the TB comes to mind)??? This really has my interest right now.

The pcv valve vacuum source can come from anywhere on the plenum. There are 4 vacuum ports left in the intake, so using anyone of them will work. I could add one if necessary, but there is really no need.

do you mean on the pass side? my drivers side v-cover has no holes.

Re: LT1 Airgap Intake Manifold

Damn,

I have a spare intake that I am actually doing the same thing to...
It is taking me forever because I don't have a plasma cutter, but I guess you understand that...

But now when I am done, it will look like I copied you!!!

BTW, it looks damn good and you did a great job, I just hope mine turns out looking half as good...

FWIW, I never thought about the diamond plate though.. I may steal that idea from you because it looks hot...

don't just make it look the same, make it better!

Lol, I was looking around my shop for a piece of aluminum to weld on as the valley floor, and I tripped over a couple of scraps of alum. diamond plate sticking out under a toolbox. They were the right size, and after welding on the plate it looked too good to paint

So do you plan to do any "controlled" environment testing??
