lt1 hanging with 03 cobra
Ive read up on many threads about this, but its a broad topic and each driver has his own opinion of 'streetability'
Basically, Im curious what would be the best way to build up an lt1 to keep up with an 03 cobra and perform well for the street and daily driving (much like a cobra would). I know they are beasts, so I wouldnt expect to beat one, at least not without spending alot of money and sacrificing streetability. With the setup, I want to maintain good fuel economy, keep emissions legal, see an even power curve, run on pump gas, and Id like to be able to do some myself and not pay thousands for a professional to work at it (wheres the fun in that ) Id like to stay off the bottle, but Im considering forced induction. Opinions would be great

Re: lt1 hanging with 03 cobra
mpg is the biggest consideration.. what good is a nice fast car if I cant afford to fuel it
also, Id prefer to leave as many internals stock as possible

Re: lt1 hanging with 03 cobra
This can be done but the problem you run into is when you start talking about making the power it takes to keep up with an 03 cobra then you gotta start strengthening the bottom end of the motor. Doing it NA would be a task. I think your best bet would be forced induction like an intercooled procharger.

Get long tube headers, catback, cai, gears, (stall if you have an auto). that will keep you with one off the line.
to keep up with them over 80 mph or from a roll..get a small custom cam(one with some higher lift but that will pass emissions), and some nicely ported heads. that will keep you with a stockish to SLIGHTLY modded one, be the most reliable, and you will still have some good gas mileage provided you have a 6 speed and drive on the highway alot.
FI on a stockish lt1 will keep you in the ball park as well..as long as your running about 6 psi. after that you will be at a wall, where your engine wont like much more boost unless you want to invest in thousands on your engine(can either build the engine for more boost, or toss on a heads/cam combo to increase the efficiency of the blower). FI by itself will be a few grand..as well the heads/cam setup combo...and thats assuming you do it by yourself. install and tuning will eat up alot of money also.
cheapest bet is get a 100 shot, headers, cat back, and cai. your gas mileage and driveability will be the same..it will be the least intense on the rest of your car for the long run(unless you spray it all the time). if your an auto..the tranny might not like the torque and sudden shock of the spray..depending on how good the condition is.
those are pretty much your options. all of them have pros and cons.

It won't be easy N/A and even twice as expensive to go blown with a stockish LT1 but if you bought a low compression shortblock, used S-trim and add a set of LE heads/blower cam setup that would be a quick car. The alternative is do some boltons like headers, converter, PCM tune, Drag radials and a 100-150shot and the car will run 11's all day. I ran 10's on a stock shortblock LT1, 3.42's stock rear, LE heads/cam seup a few years back with a 100shot. Nitrous is an awesome power adder when done right. Later Clint

Re: lt1 hanging with 03 cobra
Will stock heads and most of the bottom end stand up to 6# of boost? I hear blowby is a real hassle with lt1s, so maybe forged pistons would be a good idea. I wouldnt want to upgrade the crank and rods if I dont have to, but if I put on forged pistons would it be a fairly reliable semi-daily driver?
I was also considering the full bolt ons with an 100 wet shot, but I dont know if i will end up spending almost as much as I would on a procharger/vortech setup and still run slower and have to refill the bottle. Whats your opinions for weighing it out? Its an auto as well, and I dont want to be paying the price over and over every time I hit the pump. Maybe the bolt on package is the best for my circumstances, but FI is definately tempting Replys were great, thanks guys
For bolt ons, how close would these take me:
Long tubes, CAI, Y-pipe with high flow cats, cutout in stock I-pipe (eventually bassani-style 2.5" true duals and an x pipe in place of the y when funds permit), TB bypass, Ported TB, pullies and an electric water pump
Then, how much closer will it take me with a 100 shot? What will the cost be of this as opposed to a procharger/vortech setup, maybe with some forged pistons?

Re: lt1 hanging with 03 cobra
cobra's run 12.8-13.2 depending on weather conditions with great drivers
this not about beating a cobra its about beating the time
which its not hard to get a lt1 to hit a 12.8 with bolt-ons
