lt1 won't start, but when it does it runs fine.
this is going to be a detailed description of the problem...it's a 95 z28 lt1 with 98k miles. i've never had to do anything to this car besides new fans, water pump, and radiator. mobil 1 every month. it's ran perfect until now. i'm very obsessive when it comes to my gas (only shell, texaco, or chevron) so the other day i drove it pretty far beyond empty because there was no good gas around so of course it dies on me. i tried starting it up to atleast get it to slug over into a driveway but no go. it was making this buzzing and wirring noise. now that's all i hear. it drove for a day, although starting up slow like never before, once i had put some gas in it until i got down close to e again. then i filled up half the tank and it didn't start. i've jump started it, figured out it wasn't the battery and now i'm left wondering what it could be. it sat at chevron all day yesterday then i got to it at 10pm and it started very slowly. it drove fine on the highway all the way to my girlfriends house. i drove it around the neighborhood and nothing sounded wrong. woke up this morning no go. so i'm left stranded. alternator, starter, spark plug and wiring??? please help me. thank you, mike.

Based on your description, I'm pretty confident that it's the Fuel pump. Or more specifically, the check valve in the pump... The best way to test this theory is to get a Fuel pressure gauge and hook it up to the fuel rail Schraeder valve at the back of the intake manifold. When you turn the key to the run position, the pressure should go to about 43 psi and hold there... If it does not, then you have a problem. Check the fuses and fuel filter. If they are good, then chances are you'll have to change your fuel pump..
Good luck.

Im going to have to say you either have some air in your fuel system, or you messed up your fuel pump. Turn the key to on, and off, on, and off, without starting it. Leave it at on for a few seconds each time until you hear the fuel pump kick off ( the whirring noise you were describing ) And then try starting it.

I have ran out of gas before in my 94 Z28, but I did not have the problem you are having. I have a question for you though. When you first tried to crank the car up when you refilled it, did you turn the switch to the on position to let the fuel pump prime, then repeat that process a few more times to make sure the engine had plenty of fuel? I did this and I didn't have any problems out of mine. It sounds like you have a faulty fuel pump.

if its cranking and not starting, its most likely your fuel pump, though you should make sure before changing it. If you get a shop to change it, they will charge you an arm and your 5th limb. I'd strongly recommend putting in bad gas to avoid running on fumes.
