LT4 Cam kit

I was looking through the summit book and i ran across this kit. And it seems like a great buy considering 1.6rr's, cam and full exhaust was my next choice of mod.. What are you guy's opinions on this kit?

Its a good kit, especially for the price. However, the LT4 springs should be upgraded as they aren't the best choice for both the Hotcam and the 1.6 RRs.

Good bang for the buck, very streetable. Best cam? No. Best in it's price range? Possibly.

I agree, it is a good cam for what it costs.

If you shop around, you can get a better set up for around the same though. This is what I ordered recently:

CC503 (Used): $150
Scorpion 1.6 Roller Rockers (New: $210
Crane Valve Spring Kit (New, with Locks and Retainers): $160
Total = $520

Hot Cam Kit = $559.95

You can't compare a used cam to a brand new cam bro.

I had the opportunity to pick up a used hotcam kit for $150. I guarantee you that you can't find better bang for the buck than that.

Not trying to make this a competition or anything.

I'm just saying I was in the same situation as him (looking at the Hotcam Kit), and that was the way I went.

It's a fine kit for daily driving. adds a little lope to idle. adds a fair amount of horsepower and, from what I understand, you can still pass emissions if need be.

It is great for the price. I agree. The springs are fine for the hotcam, don't let others tell you otherwise. Some people have this theoretical idea of what a spring should be like, which is great, but the fact is that the LT4 springs have proven over, and over, and over again that they work with the Hotcam.

Well, in your sig you call your Z a "race car." The hotcam will NOT live up to that name.

A properly tuned hot cam and long tube combination is the ultimate in cheap reliable performance. I used to have that exact setup. It gained 70 RWHP over stock while increasing the RPM range by 1,000. It survived flagrant abuse for just over 20,000 mi. until it was retired for a hotter set up, stock hot cam springs and all.
Here is a video of the car on a 100 shot.
Ahh, the good old days.

this car is mostly strip/street car, well on its way to be. I was looking at around mixing and matching things and the cc305 is the biggest i heard that you can go on stock heads, this true? I am looking for mostly bottom to mid-range power. I run only a 13.5 now with cat-back flows, a 2500 stall and shift kit, and mt et street radials.. I was hoping with 1.6rrs, a cam and full true dual exhaust get me low 13s high 12s then with spray get me around a 12.3

The Hotcam kit will get you there.

Sounds doable. CC503 is a great DD cam aswell. It will cost you more, but IMO it's better than the hotcam. I'd only buy the hotcam if you were on a strict budget and/or you wanted to buy a GM/kit.

I had my first emissions test last fall w/ the Hotcam, and after comparing my previous emissions test to it, the Hotcam and tuning produced less than HALF the emissions of the stock cam and stock tuning in several areas.

The Hot Cam was designed for the SCCA Showroom stock series race cars, and it is a great cam for entry level road racing. I talked to a former SCCA racer last fall, and he claims that in 1997, he was racing a Trans Am in the series, and with head work and this cam kit, the car dynoed 450 on the motor. Most of the people on this site are into drag racing and if you are talking purely a drag cam, then this isn't for you. However if you are looking for a nice sounding, streetable, driver of a cam, then this is the kit for you. I should know, I installed one last fall.
