I pulled it out of my 97 as soon as I got it, no adverse effects since (almost 2 years).

My freind took it out of his 95 Z about 8 years ago , and he is still going strong.

If your worried about tearing up the mass air while descreening it just take it apart first. then descreen it with the center section away from you.

Yes go for it. You can tell it pulls in more air because your exhaust will sound alittle bit deeper. also port and polish the MAF. what do you need the screen for??? you have an air filter infront of it.....

They want like 300 bucks for ones already donen from performance shops...save the $$ and do it the easy way. my $.02

The screens to create even and straight airflow over the sensor :P not to block stuff from flying in. Taking it off will likely give the MAF incorrect readings because the air flowing across the sensor isn't the same speed as air flowing past other parts of the MAF.

leave it. I removed my screen and ported it. After i got my scanmaster my blms were all messed up. I replaced my maf with a stock screened, unported maf and my BLMS returned to normal. i say leave it alone.

I vote for leaving it in. GM put it there, I'm not taking it out. Simple as that for me.

I gained 2-3 RWHP on the dyno from doing it. I left the car strapped to the dyno and everything, I dynoed once with it on, and twice with it off, and the last 2 runs it had 2-3 more RWHP. A free couple RWHP is a yes to me, every little bit helps.

You have to understand that descreening the MAF will effect idle quality only if you run a stock tune, with a stock program the BLM's are ussually at 115blm at cruise, descreening the MAF will throw these to 108 BLM from where the computer cannot correct anymore, the lower the number the more fuel its telling you that your seeing from the calculated parameters, at 108 the PCM is pulling a lot of fuel out compared to what it puts in through its calculations, it comes to this conclusion through reading your o2s. If you are within these boundries you shouldn't suffer anything, an easy corretion is to just alter the fueling in the tune to get within. The stock guys will also a big desrease in performance aswell because the PE tables on a stock car are already REALLY high, by descreening your MAF your MAF readings might go up slightly which will cause you to become even more rich, easily altering the PE table will fix that aswell. Although its rarely seen because the amount of extra air its showing ussually is true that the engine is now sucking in more so it would need the extra fuel.

now, with the stock airbox design you have a very high restriction in the stock air tube going to a low restriction area which is the MAF right away. Problem here is you are slowing down the airflow & increasing pressure when going from a low pressure area(small opening) to a high pressure area (big hole) this is called a DIVERGENT duct, now with the airflow slowing down & pressure increasing as a result, you get turbulent air, as a result you need a screen to correct for this effect before the MAF will read it.

With a cold air induction system you don't have this problem because your intake is big all the way through before it reaches the MAF so you won't be getting any turbulent airflow & you should be fine.

Hope this helps.
