Main bearing question on motor rebuild

I am in the process of rebuilding an engine for my 95Z. I am going to do the T56 swap so figured I may as well rebuild the motor to put in with it. I picked up a couple of used blocks while collecting parts for my conversion. One motor is a 95, the other a 94.

We were taking off the main caps, and on both motors, we noticed that the second from the front bearing was destroyed. It's actually shiny from removing the surface and there is a bur on the edge of the bearing face. It must have gotten so hot, it seems to have shrunk and no longer fits anywhere near tightly in the main cap. You have to stretch it to put it over the crank again. Is this normal? I was just hoping to have the crank cleaned up, but both of them looked scored pretty badly....

Any help is appreciated

Re: Main bearing question on motor rebuild

That's not normal.

Sounds like a lack of oil for one reason or another.

Re: Main bearing question on motor rebuild

#1 reason for bearing failure is lack of lubrication. sounds like the crank is trashed. take them to a machine shop and see if they can grind either of them.

Re: Main bearing question on motor rebuild

Thanks for the info on that. I can't believe I ended up with 2 motors with the same problem....

I'll have to take it to a machine shop and see if they think they can save it.

Re: Main bearing question on motor rebuild

We took the block over to an old friend of my dads that's built racing engines for years. He figures I can turn the crank, and have to line bore the block.

We tore the motor down when we got home and rods 2 and 3 have spun. Rod 2 bearing was destroyed and paper thin at then ends. I don't see this being a reasonable rebuild project any more, I am going to have way more tied up in maching than I was thinking... The cylinders may have to be done since they have some score marks (Most likely pieces of that bearing and rust marks (black, midly pitted looking deals)
