is there any way of detectin a mis fire
other than having to do a check on each plug lead and spark plug??

what is a cylinder balance check that i have heard people talk about in order to detect mis fires????????????????

My Autotap scanner will read current misfires or misfire history out of the computer. Now if it would just tell me why......?

but do you have an lt1 obd1

cos i heard that the lt1 obd1 (ecm) cant detect misfires on the individual cylinders?

i have an auto xray scanner how good is it compare to other scanners for the detection of faults

No you cannot detect misfires on an OBD1 computer, which is what yours came with from the factory,

not even say a fancy scanner like the snap on which i heard was state of the art or would my auto xray do the job too.?

Check your plug wires. That was my problem. My car hesitated up to about 2200RPM with A4 2.73. But as it seems from the research I've done.... that hesitation can be caused by damn near anything.

Since an OBD-I PCM does not detect and store misfire information, it does not matter what the scanner is capable of doing. It cannot retrieve information that is not there.

Cylinder balance would seem to be in reference to compression or leakdown values. There is also injector balance that is another test done with specialized equipment.

The factory manual says to spray water on the ignition wires while the engine is running and if the idle changes, replace them. My car passes this test but I'm going to replace them anyway. The large amount of misfires on #1,3,5,7 is so much greater than #2,4,6,8 that it seems to be the logical place.
