Missfire on freeway

I was merging freeways and I got stuck behind some little beater pickup truck and I floored it to pass and it downshifted to 1st and then it missfired. When the previous owned had an inspection done in May it said it missfired under heavy load. What can I do to avoid this problem granted it happens again? Just don't floor it ? Or are there any significant problems with the engine that cause this to happen?

Nothing, but it hasn't happened since it did a couple days ago. I'm not a gearhead or anything. I mean that's all relative I suppose since I'm just about to hit 1 month for owning the car, so maybe with time and my own work on the car I might learn all kinds of stuff but otherwise I have no idea what to do to try and fix it.
