If you wanna see the front here it is.
Front:

Back:
Still wet after 6 days

Gasket maker:
Been using it for years

If you still think I am a bullshi**er come on down to Tampa or if you have some friends down here I will show it to them.
IF ANYBODY WANTS TO SEE IT PM ME AND YOU CAN SEE IT IN PERSON YOURSELF I HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE.
The gasket maker only went around the outside not on the O-Ring or inside of the cap itself. I only used it as an extra seal to prevent moisture from entering.
When brass corrodes it no longer looks shiny like in your pic.
It kind of takes a coppery tone like what you see in the picture. (basic brass is made up of 67% copper and 33% zinc)
I cleaned 1 up for you.
Look familiar?:

sorry for the bad pics
We all know how much of a pita it is to do an opti.
The last thing I wanted to do is pull it off and find this.
I wanted this to be my last cap and rotor kit I ever wanted to do on my car, convert over to the LTCC system and sell it off locally to somebody who would really appeciate it. As you can see that will not happen.
Work owns me right now I have not been able to contact MSD yet. I am hoping to do that soon.
Oh well, back to the basics.

Almost forgot, the melted spot you are referring to is gasket maker.

My humble appologies

I'm not above anyone to say sorry about the wrong assumptions. I will change the previous post.

The fact remains, it still appears that something corrosive got in it and does not appear to be the responsibility of MSD. Unless they tell you otherwise which is highly unlikely any company will admit it was their fault. The other reason I don't think it's their responsibility is, no-one would expect the manufacturing process to include a chemical that is corrosive to the contacts. No matter what the unit would be subjected to.

No problem, I probably would have said the same thing looking at the pics from another state.
What still baffles me is that the car still ran. The opti "eye" and wheel look perfectly clean.
That is why I am saying there is something up with the cap.
My luck would be that mine was made on a friday or a monday.

Possibly I missed it, but what did MSD tech support say when you called them? I know one of the engineers there at MSD if you need assistance (PM me).

Again, I think corrosive gases from the battery were pulled into the Opti through the fresh-air intake (vent) tube. I’m not sure how that happened, but it needs to be checked (hose split, off, Etc.). And if that was the cause, it isn’t a MSD only issue. It would have been the same thing with the GM.

I had some MSD Opti problems initially (loose rotor and failed optical module), but now my MSD (complete Opti) is providing good service and has been trouble-free for several months now. Knock-on-wood!

I have not been able to do it yet.
I've been working a ton of hours lately. By the time I get done with work, tech support is closed.
I am going to do it first thing monday.
As for the vent hoses they were all new when I did this cap replacement.
Also the opti was a spare I had. The original fell apart(rotor blew up inside).
I might take you up on your offer.
If MSD wants to see the old opti and this cap and rotor kit, they are more than welcome to it.

Also, the "gasket maker" when it cured-out could have been a source of corrosive out-gassing. Just like the issue of O2 sensor safe RTV.
