My Z shut off today while I was on the hwy!!! Still broke!!!

Well, I was leaving work today and I was about 5 miles down the road when it happened. I was going 45mph and the car just shut off. I steered it off of the road onto the median and I tried to crank it up; didn't crank. It's was turning over and I still had radio the entire time. I had a tool kit with me so I removed the alternator and battery and took them to Auto Zone. They tested them both for me and said they were fine.

So guess what I'm thinking now........the OPTI. Anyone else have any other ideas. Spanks!

can you hear the fuel pump run for 2 secs, also check your ground wires at stud beside the coil, could be coil wire or ignition module too.

It's not the fuel pump because I can hear it power/prime up when I turn the key to the on position. I'll check the coil and coil wire tomorrow.

Its probably your coil. Most of the time when it just cust off liek that and everything else is good, its usually the coil. They dont give any warning signm they just go.....

another reason a car would just turn off would be teh ignitions switch but u said that the car crank so ur getting power

check to c if ur getting spark , its either opti or coil now ,maybe ICM???

I had the car towed home around 7pm. I just now went out there to see what the problem is and the car cranked right up. It ran for about 10 seconds and then it cut off. What the hell could that mean???

Might also be the ignition control module. That just went out on mine with similar symptoms (but it was also idling rough for a day before hand)

Re: My Z shut off today while I was on the hwy!!! Still broke!!!

not sounding at all like a battery cable problem.. most likely it's the control module.. first one i went through did just that, then i got it to start and made it about less then a mile down the road and it died again. eventually i couldn't get my car to start at all. had another one go, and it was much worse, i took off from a light and my car just flat out fell on its face.. it drove for about 10 more minutes before it was impossible to drive period.. got so bad that it dumped a bunch of fuel in my exhaust and detonated.. killed my cat, popped the side of my muffler out and blew chunks of like black honey comb looking stuff outta my muffler... unfortunately idnition control modules are between 80 and 125 dollars, but they're really easy to get to...lol.. they're mounted on the driver side head on the same bracket as the coil, actually directly above the coil.. have fun with it.

ICM is very easy to change , but dont be fooled by ur fuel pump primeing meaning it still works, i had the same symptons and it was my pump , it would die the a few hours later it would start up and run fine, or start up and runn crappy then die again

have fun

The first thing I would do is replace your coil. Its VERY likely that could be the problem. I've had both my fuel pump go out twice and coil die but the pumps never went out while the car was on, also when you try to start it with a dead pump it will usually sputter. When my coil died it wouldn't do anything

Re: My Z shut off today while I was on the hwy!!! Still broke!!!

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner folks. It was the COIL. I just replaced it and the car runs perfectly. Also, it may be my imagination, but the car feels like it pulls a little harder now. I'm not sure if the coil had been slowly failing, but when I punched it to the floor the car took off like a rocket.

Thanks again to all you guys for helping a poor guy keep the love of his life running for yet another day.

You guys F_ing ROCK!
