N00b Opti-Question (After Search, Too)

Ok, I'm currently looking to purchase a '93+ T/A, and am new to the LT1 engine in general...I have a question re: this optispark problem. Now, from what I hear, moisture/wetness ****s them up, right...? I want to know why someone hasn't fabricated a cover of some sort to prevent this??? Like, is it something you can't cover in some manner? Anyone with a pic, as I don't know what it really is???
As I said, if this has been asked prior, I'm sorry..I did try a search, but ended up with incorrect hits.

You can buy a billet case with improved internals.... $600.

The problem can be caused by both moisture and by corrosion. The corrosion can result from moisture, but also from the ozone that is formed from the high voltage spark discharge. The 95 and later models had a "vented" Opti, to eliminate the ozone.

I think a lot of the moisture problems have been traced to a weak seal for the plug that the wiring harness connects to.

I took apart my orginal opti about 4 years ago. The orginal looked horrible. Internally, everything seemed to have a light to heavy rust coating.

When I replaced the opti I went with a vented cap though. To do this with the older style optis, you need to reuse the internal plastic piece with the plug housing, from your non vented setup.

Anyway, recently I pulled the opti back off and difference was night and day - No rust internally, just the normal wear on the cap and rotor. I never did get any of the vaccum lines installed either - I just left the vent hole open to the world. I suppose the heat from the motor and the open vent allowed the moisure to escape.

That's my 93 opti experiences anyway.

Hey if you want more 93 specifc info, for an upcoming purchase, swing by Speed Denisty LT1 Tech

As much as I love my 93, there sure are a lot of 93 problems that you've got to overcome that are not associated with the other year models.

I know this isnt about the optis, but here's another 93 specific problem that I've been dealing with lately (damn fuel rails).

93 Rails

Check out the pics on the third post down.

You may want to hook up the vacuum hose, because it connects to the intake and it will help get rid of the buildup by using a "sucking" effect.

I probably will use the vaccum lines now that I'm doing the vented opti conversion (for double roller chain), but I did run the vented cap without the vaccum hoses for a little over 4 years without a probelm... and the opti looked damn good when I pulled it
