well the car does have 100k on it, so i could use that to justify the new alternator. if i got a new one i wouldnt use the same one because feasibly it wouldnt work correct? how is the stocker rated and what would be a good step up??

Any decent shop will have the equipment needed to test a charging system. Looks like this: http://images.google.com/images?q=tb...pecs/bva34.gif
But do what Shoebox said first and take those silly pulleys off.

You should listen to what he is saying. The guy speaks from experience.Try doing a search on pulleys and see what comes up.I think you will find that they arent worth the hassle.

Charging problems are common with pulleys and they offer very little HP gain. Frequently, they are bolt-on trouble. Not a very good bargain for a "poor guy". You can always sell them to get some of your money out of them.

The stock 94-97 alternator is rated at 140 amps and is easily adequate to meet normal demands.

Remove the pulley for now as suggested, you can always replace it later if thats not the problem.

Hey now, I dont know if I'm a "regular" over there but blanket statements tend to step on toes There are definitely some goofballs over there that can give you the wrong impression but there are alot of others just looking for some good advise.

Would a more powerful alternator help compensate for the power taken by the underdrive pulley?

Just curious...

Not if it's turning too slow.

Quicksilver you are correct.
In the future I will try to stay away from blanket statements like that.

As for the topic, I agree with Shoebox, take the pullys off and see what happens, I have just a crank pulley but I don,t have any charging problems.
Some do some don,t so take off the pulleys and see how it goes.

When you say the car trys to take off by itself, do you mean the engine revs up by itself to a level where it will pull the car? You don't have to touch the gas pedal, it just revs up on it's own?
