need help fast, car overheating
today i was driving home when my check gauges light caught my eye. i looked and saw my temp at about 250-260. i pulled over right away. i AAAed the car home. the car didnt seem that hot though. the motor atleast. i think its a sensor gone bad. but when the car was nice a cool while waiting on triple A (2.5 hours), i started it and let it idle. it was fine for about a minute. about 100 degrees. then it started gong up rather quickly. i gave it gas and held it for about a minute at 3-4k. then it started getting real hot again. what do you guys think? sensor, radiator, water pump? thanks for the help

Your temp gauge and sensors are probably working correctly. Sounds like your thermostat is stuck. After the motor has warmed up, feel the upper radiator hose. If it is not hot to the touch, bingo. The thermostat is stuck. You should also check your coolant level in case the water pump is leaking.

i dont think its either. i changed the thermostat last week to a hypertech cause i was running a 180 with a thermomaster chip. so i got the proper stat in. i hope thats not it. its not the water temp either. i checked it yesterday and the radiator is still full. i think its either simple electrical or radiator or water pump. car has 136k with stock radiator and pump. so if it is i wont be dissapointed. but if its the stat ill be pissed.

Did you bleed the system after the stat change?

yes i did but ill make sure all the air is gone again. thats a great tech page. a bunch of goop points i should check on. thanks. maybe im wrong and it is the thermostat. i guess i need to hit a chevy dealer and dish $30 for another hypertech.

i am having the same type of trouble haven't found it yet. If your water pump is bad it will leak out the weap hole on the bottom of the pump. It is really small prob a 1/8th hole. You can check your thermostat by putting it in a pot of water and seeing if it opens up. Or try running the car without the thermostat see if it overheats then. Mine of course has failed all of the test. Good luck!

thermostat???
found in a tech article:
While on the subject of thermostats, the LT1 reverse flow system uses a special, long thermostat that works together with the passages in the water pump to provide proper coolant routing. If you use an old SBC (small block Chevy) style thermostat, you run the risk of the system not operating with proper efficiency and it may overheat. Escalating temps can be caused by poor air or coolant flow.
