Need help with how to adjust lifter pre-load

I have comp R lifters and my dad set the pre-load on them. He said he bottomed them out then loosened them 1/2 turn. Don't you turn them 1/16th to 1/8th once the pushrod is seated in the lifter at 0 lash, but not bottomed out. I'm supprised I haven't collapsed a lifter with all the pre-load thats on them.

You can also tell me how to adjust them with the motor running if thats a better way. I just can't believe how much pre-load are on them.
:edit:
I also have a dial indicator if that would help me adjust them with the motor off....

Definitly don't bottom them out then come up half a turn. Your cam won't last long if the car even runs at all. Most guys here do a 1/4 to 1/2 turn past zero lash. Zero lash is when you tighten up the rocker to the point where you just take all the slop out of the pushrod on the valve your adjusting, then a 1/2 past that. I prefer the non-running method cause you don't have oil all over the place, but if you prefer the running method, you wanna get them all to where their not rattling anymore while running, then do one rocker at a time. Loosen it till it starts chattering, snug the rocker down slowly till it gets quiet again, then 1/4 to 1/2 past that. If your curious to what the factory spec is, it's 1 turn past according to the factory shop manual. I've run all three settings and have settled on a 1/2 turn past. Hope this helps. Funny story on this though, way back in the day, my buddies got beat in their stock GTA. Next day they bought a cam and put it in, then tightened down all the rocker arm nuts tight till they wouldn't go anymore. Then the car wouldn't start. They couldn't figure it out, so they took it to a shop. I can only imagine the look on the tech's face when he found that.

That is WAY too much for comp r's! You need to be about 1/16th past o lash, if even that far. Definately do not bottom them out and back up, this will be very bad!

Well he said he though about it he set them at 1/2 lash, not bottoming them out and brining them back up. I'm going to readjust them and try to set them at 1/16th to 1/8th...
