Need help reading my Datamaster File

I'm very new to scanning software and I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at. I did notice that when I'd rev the car in neutral, I got as much as 5 deg of knock retard.

I posted the file hereDataMasterZipFile

if the link doesn't work, you can paste this into your browser: http://www.geocities.com/gabepoints/first.zip

Any help is very appreciated.

Thanks.

PS I'll be reading over the datamaster PDF in the meantime.

Okay, let me get a little more specific...

1 - MAP at idle (825rpm) @ 30, the datamaster stuff said it should be in the 35 - 40 range. Is this bad?

2 - LTerm Counts: Left @ 114 & Right @109. I read this should be around 128.

3 - STerm Counts: Left@ 123 & Right @131. This also should be in the 128 are.

4 - MAF (AFGS): This is about 7.8x (I'm not sure what's good here)

5 - BPW (Injectors): Left and Right are around 2.6x

6 - IAC: At idle its about 30, is this okay?

7 - Biggest problem I see, 5 deg of retard when I reved the car to 3200 rpm. I did not hold it at 3200rpm it was just a quick "blip" of the throtle.

Does anyone see anything that jumps out as a problem?

Thanks.

Have you read my online ScanMaster writeup? It explains what to look for on a lot of the sensors and parameters.

1 - MAP at idle (825rpm) @ 30, the datamaster stuff said it should be in the 35 - 40 range. Is this bad?

Lower is better at idle. MAP is the opposite of vaccum. A stock cam LT1 should pull 20"Hg vacuum, which would be about 30-35kPa at sea level, with a normal barometer.

-----
2 - LTerm Counts: Left @ 114 & Right @109. I read this should be around 128.

The PCM is pulling fuel out of the "normal" calculation. If it wasn't doing this, it would be running rich. There are 18 different "Cells" to store this data, based on RPM and MAP (MAP is used as a measure of engine load.... low MAP = low load, high MAP = high load). The LT counts, also known as BLM's (block learn multipliers, or long term fuel corrections) need to be associated with a Cell # to be meaningful. For some reason the right side would be running even richer than the left side, if it weren't making the corrections.

-----
3 - STerm Counts: Left@ 123 & Right @131. This also should be in the 128 are.

The short term counts (aka "integrators" or INT) are temporary fuel correction multipliers. They should be changing 9 times per second, and varying equally to either side of 128. If your BLM's are stable, the "average" INT will be very close to 128. You can't just look at a single value... they should be moving all over the place.

-----
4 - MAF (AFGS): This is about 7.8x (I'm not sure what's good here)

That is 7.8 grams of air per second (GPS). Normal at idle.

-----
5 - BPW (Injectors): Left and Right are around 2.6x

Base injector pulse width in milliseconds... .1 - 2mS at idle is normal... yours are maybe a tad high???

-----
6 - IAC: At idle its about 30, is this okay?

Yes.... at idle you want 20 - 40 "counts".... a count is a step by the motor. The higher the number, the more open the idle air motor is, and the more air is entering that way to maintian the idle speed.

-----
7 - Biggest problem I see, 5 deg of retard when I reved the car to 3200 rpm. I did not hold it at 3200rpm it was just a quick "blip" of the throtle.

Revving the car at idle is really absolutely useless... .it does not in any way shape or form represent a real world driving condition. The idea of the scanner is to get it out on the road and see how it performs under varying real world operating conditions.

Thanks Fred.

No, I have not. I've only read the datamaster .pdf thats on the TTS site. I'll give your write-up a read today.

I haven't been able to do any "real world" testing because I've got one of those new laptops without a serial port. I bout the usb to serial adapter but when I tried to plug into my car, it crashed my laptop. Upon reboot, the datamaster software is telling me that my 20 free trial period is over. I'm waiting to hear back from TTS on that but while I was waiting, I dragged my home pc to the garage and used that.

What I'm trying to figure out is why my car has a miss under load. It only does it in the lower rpm range (1000 - 2000) and only in the taller gears (3rd - 6th, especially 6th). I was hoping datamaster would be able to indicate if I have an intake leak or lean condition, does it look like I do?

I'm thinking a spark plug. I've swapped out wires, made sure I have no exhause leaks, replaced the coil and coil wire, ran octane boost and seafoamed the combustion chaber. I've sprayed carb cleaner around the intake in search of leaks but found nothing. New Spark plugs are on the way.

Thumbs up

I just got cleared to borrow a laptop from work w/a serial port. Looks like I'll be able to get some real info this evening. I'll post my findings as it seems many here are having similar problems as I am.
