need some help quik!!!!

ok friday my car started messing up. i was driving and it started shaking and spuddering like it was running out of gas. so i changed the filter and it was full of black goo so i was like ok it was pluged. put the new one up and it ran ok then later that night i heard something so i rolled down the window and it was backfiring they wernt real loaud but it did it for along time. it did it about every 3 secs. and idle is really rough. so im guessing its the opti? then today on my way to the tire shop to get a new tire b/c my new bfg drag got a nial in it it was runnin bad. then when i left to go to work it ran fine. so it is doing every once in awile. so is it the opti? thanks

Re: need some help quik!!!!

The only way I really figured out my opti was bad was to remove it and take it apart. Not a very good suggestion but I just wanted to take the car apart and get familiar with it and got lucky. Almost sounds like a clogged injector but I have also heard of that being confused for a bad opti-spark. How many miles are on the ignition system? You might also need to drain the tank if there was goo in the filter. I just changed my filter and noticed a big difference.
