Thumbs up New book on rebuilding LT1 engines!

I just got back from a trip to Barnes & Noble. I went to get a book on rebuilding the TH400 in my BBC truck and happen upon a new (Nov 2002) book on LT1/LT4s.

It is entitled "How to Rebuild Small-Block Chevy LT-1/LT-4 Engines" by Mike Mavrigan ISBN: 1-55788-393-9 for $18.95. Even though Mike didn't get the engine name precise in the title (LT-1 should be LT1), there seems to be a good amount of detailed info on our engines in this 186 page book. Pictures of parts and assemblies are excellent. I've never seen a book on LT1s this complete and easy to read (and I have a 97 F-Body Helm shop manual set). I haven't read it all yet, just thumbed through the pages enough to convince me to buy it.

I'd recommend that everybody take a serious look at this book.

How funny, the guy who is building my engine came up to me at work this morning and asked me to buy it for the buildup. I bought it off amazon.com at like 8am this morning. Cant wait to get it. BTW, I paid 13 bucks for it new.

Is the book written in laymans terms? I am pretty new into automotive performance and have a LT1. Would it be beneficial for a not so knowledgable person to get it, or would I be completely confused?

I think it would be an excellent primer for most any LT1 enthusiast. THe photos show wonderful detail and there are a good number of sections/procedures/tips on all aspects of the engine from tear down to rebuild. Included are measurement and tolerance specs and TQ ratings on all engine and accessories related bolts. If you want to know more about your engine this appears to be the book. It is easy to read and not the boring techno garble one has to struggle through in the Helm (GM) service manuals. For less that $20 it almost is a must have for any student of LT1. It has the most LT1 info in one place of any book I've come across. The only section missing is performance modifications. There simply isn't much regarding this in the book.

What are some other stock engine rebuilding books that are worth buying? I am definately buying this one, but I might get a couple others too.

I bought this book a few weeks ago. I've been thinking about building my own engine.

Have any of you guys bought any of the measuring equipment?
Dial bore gauges ect?

How many people are just using the snap gauge to measure bores ect.?

Which micrometers do most of you recommend?

The tools alone can add up to over 1K if you get the good stuff.

I had been planning on using this book for a reference and building my engine at a night class at a local community college that teaches GM techs but I can't make up my mind.

If I was planning on tearing down my LT1 to do a heads and came install would this book be any better than the Helms manual? Does it have all the tq specs and install procedures etc?

Thanks
