Nitto NT555s?

Anyone try the Nitto NT 555 Extreme Performance in any size? Not the drag radial. I am looking at the 285/40 17. Mainly concerned about dry traction. I will take it on a few trips though, so wet is semi important (I wish it wasn't, I'd drive around on BFG DRs all day!).

I have 275/35/18. Havent done much driving with them yet, they're brand new and the car has seen very little street time. Michigan weather isnt cooperating.

I run the 275/40ZR17s on the front. They work really well dry, I don't have much wet experience with them though, My car rarely sees rain...

NT555 or 555R (drag radial)? I paid $220 mounted and balanced per tire for the NT555s which I have on the back. My Falkens on the front were $150 mounted and balanced a piece, but I have a hook up.

The Nittos are about $220 a piece from Discount Tire Direct in 275/35/18 (I see you have the same rims). The drag radials are a little less if I remember correctly, closer to $200 a piece.

Anyone else? I'm having trouble deciding between these and the goodyears f1 gs-d3. The Nittos are a little cheaper.

If you guys are seeing 220 per tire I dunno... your in the chicago area so you could check out speed inc's website... www.ls1speed.com they have 275-40r17 for 320 a pair... and 245-45r17's "matching front tires pair" for 310

I have no idea how much balancing costs though

Yeah I wanted the F1 GS-D3s but they were about $10-15 more per tire. I also wanted a street tire because I didnt like picking rocks and debris out of my BFG DRs after driving on the street with them. Either way you go, you're getting a good tire...just depends how much you want to pay.

I paid $720 for mine with new chrome stems , inside balance, and mounting. In the Chicago area, and that was about $20 over cost

My thoughts exactly. Good advice. Thanks.

Re: Nitto NT555s?

I know this is an old thread but I figured I'd give an opinion from someone with racing experience on the tires...

I have Nitto 555 street (not drag) tires 275/40/17's on 17x9.5 inch wheels on my 99 z28 and I've done 3 autocross events and 2 solo 2 schools this year. I had the chairman Steve Hazard of our autocross events drive my car, who's driven many cars and usually always wins in his class. He told me my Nitto street tires felt like they had the traction of snow tires. I later tried out other people's cars with other tires (Kuhmo, Falken), and everyone felt like they had a ton more grip than I did. The Nitto555 street tire in my opinion is not competetive in autocrossing and probably other kinds of racing.

I have however had no problems driving in the rain nor had any noticable wear yet on about 6000 miles. So far I'd say these are great street commuting tires. You can do a few donuts and your tread will stay intact due to the good wear. Buy these tires for just street driving, but dont expect them to win you autocross events.
