No Muffler

No Muffler
I have a 1995 Z that is all stock except for the KN filter. Does it mess anything up if I just take out the muffler and run straights with the cat in there. I didnt know if there was an issue with back pressure or anything. I think it will be pretty loud but oh well. I would weld exhaust pipe in place of where the muffler was. Thanks

I did the same thing till i got headers i drove like that for a few months and never throw the light but i was told it would mess up my cats and 02 sensors after awhile. It was loud and sounded good then i throw some long tube headers and open headers and now i think the no muffler was notthing compaired to open headers

Re: No Muffler
I did it... It's not that loud. It's definately louder, but with the stock cat, it's pretty quite. Without the cat it's twice as loud. My cat also DID break apart and clog about 5,000 miles after i did this. I had mine removed to right behind the cat though, so im sure thats why the cat broke. You will be fine just running a straight pipe out the back. It will be loud though since there will be all of that pipe to echo in. Not unbearable though. I've been running with no exhasut for about 3 months. I live with it. If you remove it by the cat, and remove the cat, you will get false knock. I am getting falso knock which is killing my top end.

Re: No Muffler
i cut my muffler off and drove it for 5k with SLP shorties, Y-pipe and 3" pipe going to the rear axle to dump..
it was loud..., never had any problems besides some hardcore knock which surprisingly the LT4 KM took care of. also drove it 350 miles from new york to Connecticut on the highway doing 80 he whole way. only got pulled over twice... both cops laughed and told me to take it easy (i knew one of them)

So if I have the stock manifolds, the stock y pipe, and the cat, will I still get false knock if I just weld tubing in place of the muffler. I dont expect it to be crazy loud, just louder and better flowing. I know I wont get the flow benefit as I would from a catback but the main reason is just better sound.

Re: No Muffler
Why not just put a cheap $35 Flowtech cutout on your I-pipe or the piping that goes over the axle into your muffler (Zed style)? It's a MUCH simpler solution that will give you that same, loud unmuffled sound you're looking for (you'll also pick up some rear wheel horsepower from it too). Not to mention you can always cap it up and run the exhaust through your stock muffler whenever you want the car to be quiet or get tired of the noise...
Or you could just do what you're saying you're going to do which is cut out the muffler and run a pipe in place of it out two tailpipes (straightpipes)...
Just my $.02,
Mike

Re: No Muffler
After getting my hooker cat back, I had it on for a few months, then decided that unbolting the exhaust right before the muffler sounded way way better. That was with stock manifolds and cat. I loved the sound and so did everyone else. Now that I had mids and a gutted cat, without the muffler it sounds hidious. I ran without the muffler for several months and nothing bad ever happened.

Re: No Muffler
I know 2 guys who used to own Fbods. 1 guy gutted his cat and left the stock catback. The other guy left his cat and pulled off his stock muffler. To my amazement the no cat, stock catback system was noticeably louder. So my point is I wouldnt worry about it being unbareably loud and you shouldnt see any SES light problems.
