NO spark z28 Please help

I have a 1994 z28 camaro. I am getting no spark but i am getting fuel. I saw a website with the diagram for the wiring for the opti and A and D should have 10 to 12v but they both have none and the red wire which is C is getting power and it is supposed to be grounded
http://shbox.com/1/95_ign_system_schematic.jpg

I was thinking if there would be anyway to avoid this and just provide the spark from an outside source or what would cause this power issue in the wires, please help

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

You are reading the reference incorrectly.

The reference to "more than 10V" on the A and D terminals is with respect to the IC Module connector, not the Opti connector.

http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#opti_test

A and B on the Opti connector are 5V square wave signals. So the voltage is going to vary between 0 - 5V. D on the Opti is ground. C on the Opti is the 12V power supply to the optical module.

Have you scanned it for codes? Loss of the low and/or high resolution pulse signals from the Opti will set codes (DTC 16 for low res, DTC 36 for high res). DTC 16 shuts down the fuel. Fuel pump will still prime for a couple seconds, then it won't run any more, and injectors are disabled.

There are also codes for the PCM white signal wire to the ICM that tells the ICM to fire the coil.

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

Yea you are right I realized that last night...I got the plug to the icm and the opti mixed up and the electrical seems correct, changed the icm and the coil but still no spark....so since the electrical is ok does that mean my pcm is good leaving me with the possibility that the opti is gone????

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

Unfortunately I dont have a diagnostic, But I figure i would at least try to get spark so the car would at least turn over, then worry about the car staying up(maybe the security lock) the white wire you are refering to, is it the ignition control?? just to make sure im testing the right one

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

Ok...update...got her to turn over....changed the dizzy...now just have to get her to stay on....im not sure if it is the security or not...she doesnt really idle...real choppy for a few secs(maybe 400 rpm) then cuts off...im going to check the spark plug wiring, also i did a partial security bypass...just the yellow and black wire to make the key work...the light still blinks so what else do I have to do?

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

When you changed the distributor (please don't call it a "dizzy") are you sure you indexed the splined drive shaft correctly?

Indexed the splines? well it could only go in one way due to the shaft having a certain pattern but im not exactly sure what you mean

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

There is a wider spline on the opti shaft,I would double check and make sure you have it lined up correctly. It is very possible to install in-correctly.

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

I'd say 10% of the installs manage to get the splines lined up incorrectly. IT will go together wrong.

If you are 100% certain you did it correctly (a lot of the others said the same thing) you may have the plug wires crossed.

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

Almost assuredly you have plug wires crossed.

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

Well did the tune up and this time i know for sure that the wires are right...so im breaking it back down to get to the splines....question...when i did it the rotor tip(where it strikes) was facing down while the white mark or the indexed was facing up, is that right? if not what direction should it face?

Re: NO spark z28 Please help

im beat...i even tried to put it on a different way and it wouldnt slide on....the rotor faces str8 down and the indexed is slightly to the left...maybe 10degrees if that...i dont know...something i noticed when doing the plug wires....my o2 on my driver side was hot...the ignition was ON but i havent started the car for the day yet...could that be a factor?
