O-ring on water pump drive shaft. Where on shaft does it go?

Hey guys, just wanting a little bit more advise. I have a 97 ws6. Where exactly does the o-ring for the water pump drive from the engine block go? I've seen a picture and it was right at the end of the splines. Right now at the end of the splines there is a black ring. Is this the old o ring flattend out? Doesn't seem like it wants to budge. Do i take this off to put new one in and if so how? Or does the new o-ring sit flush on the side of the shaft where the other seal that sets in the timing cover is? I changed that seal already with all of the tips i got and searched.

The o-rings go in a groove right near the end of each splined shaft (water pump side and engine drive side). http://shbox.com/ci/water_pump.jpg

ok thanks shoebox, that tells me to take the black old ring off. I thought there was a groove for the o ring to set on, but it is covered by the flatened(old?) ring.

Yes, the olds ones get flat and hard like plastic. Dig 'em out.
