o rings on the optispark

what are they for?

If I'm not mistaken, it's for sealing the driveshaff that protrudes through the pump housing

they're oil seals. You WILL leak if you choose to run without them.

They are not oil seals. The opti drive shaft has a hole in the end and there is another hole on the shaft on the other side of the o-rings. Oil is able to go right past the o-rings through that channel if it wanted to. That pretty much negates the o-rings being any kind of a seal. They appear to be there for stabilization of the shaft in the end of the cam.

they were so dried out and brittle that i didn't realize they were o rings until i had already put it back together and found them in my gasket kit.

A lot of times they will already be disintegrated and gone.
