obd1

This is a simple question, im sure I already know the anwser, but I was talking to my engine builder yesterday and told him my car did not need a chip, because I can just plug into it. And he said it must be obd2, and I said no its obd1, then we debated for a sec and I dropped it. The guy can build good engines, just not extremely up to date with fuel injection (which is fine because he is building the shortblock and im buying all parts) So am I right, or have I been wrong all this time. Thanks!

94 is the switch from the chip cars(93') Instead of the removeable chip, the pcm can be reprogrammed. You are correct.

"OBD-I" is not determined by whether there is a fixed chip or a replaceable chip. It's determined by whether the PCM has the OBD-II standards for diagnostics and trouble codes. 93-95 F-Body LT1's OBD-I; 96-97's are OBD-II. The Corvette's are a bit different, since they threw an OBD-1.5 in the middle of the switchover.

your right, I read his post about the mechanic and the mentioned chip. I meant it was still obd 1 , it just didn't need a chip. Sorry, I should have been more clear.

I wasn't "correcting" you.... I was just trying to answer the original question.

I know , Fred. It can be hard at times to get good info on here , as sometimes it is very misleading.
Didn't some f-body get the obd2 plug but were still considered OBD1?

I knew the year, but Fred said the Vettes had a "1.5". I am wondering if these 2 are the same or are they completely different.

No. The Corvette got a single after-cat O2 sensor and a couple other OBD-II gimmicks added to their PCM in 94. Maybe GM planned to do that in the 95 F-Body LT1, and installed the OBD-II 16-pin ALDL connector, but then never followed through with the PCM, single after-cat sensor, etc. from the Corvette.

Then there's the B-Body cars with the LT1..... they started with the vented Opti in 94... but I don't know what year they went to OBD-II.

I think 96' was a mandate for OBD2.

engine builder build engines.....so there aren't always up to date on that stuff.

Just like you wouldn't want the man tuning your PCM building you engine or your baker cutting your hair etc.
