Odd fuel system question

Odd fuel system question
My Z is very hard to start and I'm confident that it is a problem with the Fuel system.
When I hook my fuel pressure gauge to the valve on the fuel rail and turn the key, I can hear the fuel pump engage, but I don't get any measurable pressure... If I crank the motor a few times, sometimes it will start. When it does start, I get around 32 psi. What would cause those symptoms... I'm assuming it's the fuel pump... How does it give me pressure if I get the car started?
Any ideas are welcome...
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Odd fuel system question
There a check valve built into the fuel pump to keep the system pressurized for starting. Most likely the check valve failed and you'll need to replace the fuel pump. Other things to check for are any external fuel leaks or leaky injectors. If your car is running fine other than the hard starting, it's the check valve.
