Odd Grinding sound? Clutch??

Odd Grinding sound? Clutch??
I recently purchased a 96 Z-28 6M. I hear a grinding/ratcheting sound. The sound sounds like tires spinning slowly on a loose gravel road. This sound occurs for a split second just as the clutch engages and puts power to the wheels. It is most noticeable when beginning to accellerate from a stop in first gear. It grinds just as the car is beginning to move. It does not matter if I am going straight or turning. Turning trac control on or off doesn't make a difference? I have only heard this same sound once when shifting between 1st and 2nd at a slow speed. Is this a clutch problem? Or is is differential? Honestly, if could even be the tires slipping for just a split second -that's what it sounds like, but I can't believe there is tire slippage on the slow speed takeoffs that I do. Any ideas? By the way, the clutch does not slip. I put it in 5th and floored it...no slippage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Read through all that and see if you just don't have the common T56 growl.
Oh, and this probably would have been better suited to the Drivetrain forum, but I'm sure a mod will pop in and move it if need be.

That sounds exaclty like the problem I have with my m6 once in a while. Sometimes itll do it every time I go from a stop, and other times it wont do it for weeks. Im not realy sure if this is the cause, but I was poking around under the car once trying to figure it out. I removed the slave cylinder and the clutch fork or whatever its called seemed like it was a bit loose, maybe that was it. When talking off from a stop the clutch fork may rattle. I dunno just a thought.

same sound here, i know what you mean when you say tires spinning on gravel. it only does it when the clutch engages or shift into second at low speeds. I am also looking for an answer.

Does it seem to happen in 1st and 2nd gears with the clutch fully released but only while at very low RPMs (1-1.5K RPM)

Yes, it does remain for a second or 2 after i release the clutch. More noticable in 1st then in second but yes it still tends to make that noise with the clutch fully released just for a second or 2 at under 2k rpms or lower then it stops.

Re: Odd Grinding sound? Clutch??
Sounds like a broken spring in the clutch disc. If it goes away by 2000 RPM just about everytime, then no doubt about it. It's just the frequency of engine firing exciting the natural frequency of the transmission, causing the gears in the to cycle back and forth on themselves.
If it is the disc, there is no worry of damage or needing repair. It's more of a creature comfort as not to annoy the driver.
Can you hear it through the gear shifter?
Where are you located?
Can you record it somehow to post?
